This time, I want to share my own experience of how easily we can fall into the trap of thinking, \u201cI simply have an older dog at home.\u201d<\/p>\n

I know Faddy inside out. I know his quirks, habits and characteristic behaviours almost without thinking. Yet last week, I realised that when some of those familiar behaviours began to disappear, my first thought was not to look for a possible health-related reason. Instead, I told myself and Irene, \u201cWell, he is an older dog.\u201d<\/p>\n

The purpose of this article is not to dismiss the natural changes that come with ageing. Those changes are real. An older dog may move more slowly, sleep more and need different care from a young dog. What I want to show is that sometimes an outside perspective and one simple question, \u201cIs your dog really doing all right?\u201d, can interrupt a pattern of thinking we have grown too comfortable with.<\/p>\n

An older dog should not become a convenient explanation<\/h2>\n

For some time, Faddy\u2019s digestion and appetite had been different from usual. A dog whose stools had always been very good had recently started having softer stools. His appetite also varied considerably, but I attributed that to the warmer weather rather than a possible health concern.<\/p>\n

He was no longer moving around or \u201ctalking\u201d as much as before. Instead, he would lie quietly on the terrace or the grass. Once again, I told myself, \u201cI have an older dog.\u201d Moving had also become more difficult because his right front leg was bothering him slightly, but I had an explanation for that too: \u201cHe has arthritis there.\u201d And, of course, the same thought followed: \u201cHe is old.\u201d<\/p>\n

But where is the line between a dog who is simply ageing and a dog whose body may be going through something that deserves closer attention?<\/p>\n

Irene and I had spoken about Faddy, and she agreed that we do have senior dogs at home. They are now in their eleventh year. Neither of us has previously had a German Shepherd of such a respectable age, so we do not know exactly what to expect.<\/p>\n

Last Thursday, Irene visited us with her mother. She mentioned that Faddy seemed quieter and calmer, but we both continued to explain it as part of ageing. The comment that stayed with me most was something Irene said spontaneously: \u201cOh, Faddy, your belly has dropped so low.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another person\u2019s question can become a turning point<\/h2>\n

Because Faddy still seemed different from usual to Irene, her observation stayed with me. Naturally, I then began imagining every possible illness. I wondered whether it could be cancer or something else serious. That evening, I decided to call Irene so I could talk it through. I simply said, \u201cYou know, you made me a little worried.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then she told me something that became a turning point. Her mother had asked in the car, \u201cIs Faddy really all right?\u201d<\/p>\n

Irene\u2019s answer had been quick and, honestly, quite logical: \u201cYes, of course. He is simply a large, older dog. He is already ten years old. His belly has been a little larger and lower recently, but he moves less than he used to. His abdominal muscles have probably just become weaker.\u201d<\/p>\n

That could have been the end of it. I could have pushed the thought aside and stayed with my original explanation. But the question remained in my mind: is everything really fine?<\/p>\n

Neither Irene\u2019s spontaneous observation nor her mother\u2019s question was criticism or an attempt to frighten me. They were simply honest observations from people looking at Faddy from the outside. After speaking to Irene that evening, I began watching him differently over the following days. I also thought back over the previous weeks, and suddenly the small pieces of the puzzle began to fit together.<\/p>\n

His belly had already been larger than usual for some time. His coat was no longer as beautiful as before. He was scratching himself more. His appetite was not quite the same, and he had less energy.<\/p>\n

None of these signs seemed serious enough on its own to cause much concern. Each one had a possible explanation: age, less movement, the weather, an off day or some random change. Together, however, they began to tell a different story.<\/p>\n

Sometimes we convince ourselves of a comfortable truth<\/h2>\n

All of this made me think about how easy it is to explain away changes in our pets, both to ourselves and to the people close to us.<\/p>\n

Those of us who live with our dog or cat every day know them best. We see their habits, personality, appetite, movement and small changes in mood. At the same time, that daily closeness can make changes harder to notice.<\/p>\n

When something develops slowly, our eyes become accustomed to it. It is much like not noticing a child growing from one day to the next, or how a tree in the garden becomes larger over the years. We do see the change, but because it happens gradually, it never seems particularly significant on any single day.<\/p>\n

Someone who has not seen our dog for a while, or who is simply looking with fresh eyes, may notice something we no longer see as clearly.<\/p>\n

Sometimes the most important thing is simply a question<\/h2>\n

Sometimes the most important thing is not advice, but one simple question: \u201cIs everything really fine?\u201d<\/p>\n

That question does not provide a diagnosis. It does not tell us what is wrong, and it does not mean that something must be wrong. It can, however, encourage us to look again.<\/p>\n

In Faddy\u2019s case, the question helped me notice things I had previously attributed quite calmly to age, weaker muscles or reduced activity. Some of those changes may indeed be age-related, but something still required closer attention.<\/p>\n

That is why an outside perspective can be so valuable. If someone you trust says, \u201cYour dog seems a little different,\u201d you do not have to take it as criticism. Take it as a helpful observation, not because they must be right, but because they are seeing your dog with fresh eyes.<\/p>\n

Look for patterns rather than focusing on one day<\/h2>\n

Our task is not to panic over every small change. Our task is to notice patterns. When several little things begin to change at the same time, it is worth pausing and asking:<\/p>\n
