A well-chosen chew can keep a dog occupied, help relieve boredom and give them an opportunity to do something completely natural: chew. Only a few days ago, Faddy took a beef nose outside. I completed my 8.5-kilometre run, and when I returned, he was still lying in the same place, happily working on it. I feel much more comfortable leaving the dogs at home when I know they have a suitable activity.

Dogs are natural chewers. With some dogs, this is obvious from puppyhood, when shoes, furniture legs and anything left on the floor can become fair game. In others, the need is expressed more quietly, but it is still there. Chewing helps dogs explore their environment, release tension and stay occupied. In my experience, food can also play a significant role. Faddy caused very little trouble as a puppy after I changed his food as soon as he came home.

Oscar, on the other hand, initially stayed on the same food he had received in his first home, and he managed to chew practically every corner of the house into a rounded shape. Whatever the individual reasons, good-quality chews for dogs can be a useful part of everyday life.

Chewing can help a dog settle

For many dogs, chewing is a calming activity. When a dog can focus on a suitable chew, it may help release tension and make it easier to settle.

This can be especially useful:

after an active walk;

in the evening when the dog needs to wind down;

on rainy days when there is less outdoor activity;

when the dog simply needs something calm to do;

when boredom leads the dog to chew inappropriate objects.

A chew is not a quick solution to a behavioural problem. If a dog experiences severe anxiety, repetitive behaviour or constantly destroys objects, it is important to consider the whole picture: nutrition, exercise, routine, stress levels and daily enrichment. Professional advice may also be needed. As a calm everyday activity, however, suitable chewing can provide valuable support.

At our home, Oscar and Faddy often choose a chew at the end of the evening, once they have eaten and it is time to settle before bed. We keep their chews in a box that they can access themselves. I rarely see them investigating it in the morning or during the day, but after dinner they often go and see what is available.

A chew provides mental stimulation

Dogs need more than physical exercise. They also need mental activity. Sniffing, searching, licking and chewing all give a dog an opportunity to use their brain. The saying that a tired dog is a good dog has some truth to it, but tiredness can be mental as well as physical.

A chew gives the dog a task: hold it, work on it, chew and concentrate. This can be particularly helpful for dogs that need plenty of activity but cannot always have a long training session or an energetic walk.

Mental stimulation also matters for older dogs, puppies and dogs whose movement is restricted for any reason. A suitable chew can help make the day more interesting without causing excessive excitement.

It is important to choose a product that matches the dog’s size, chewing strength and experience. A chew that is too small may present a swallowing risk, one that is excessively hard may place too much stress on the teeth, and one that is too soft may disappear before it provides meaningful activity.

Chewing may support dental and gum care

Firm chewing provides mechanical contact with the teeth and gums. When a dog works on a suitable chew, it may help remove some surface plaque and provide natural stimulation for the gums.

This does not mean that a chew replaces tooth brushing or professional dental care. It does not. A suitable chew can simply be one part of everyday dental support.

The amount of dental care required varies from one dog to another. Some develop plaque and tartar more easily than others. Smaller dogs often experience more dental problems because their teeth are crowded into a smaller area. It is therefore worth monitoring your dog’s breath, gums, tooth colour and whether eating or chewing appears comfortable. A sudden reluctance to eat can sometimes be related to dental pain.

If a dog has broken teeth, inflamed gums, pain or heavy tartar, consult a veterinarian before offering hard chews.

Chews for dogs: how to choose the right one

When choosing a chew, it is not enough to ask whether the dog wants it. Most dogs want plenty of things, and many are not particularly selective about what they consider edible. The more useful question is whether the chew suits the dog’s body, teeth and digestion.

A good chew should ideally be:

made with a simple and transparent composition;

made from ingredients that are as natural as possible;

free from unnecessary colours, flavours and preservatives;

an appropriate size;

an appropriate level of firmness;

suited to the dog’s chewing habits and experience;

from a trustworthy source.

Composition is particularly important for dogs with sensitive digestion. If a dog receives several different treats, chews, training rewards and scraps from the table during the same day, it can become difficult to identify what caused an upset stomach.

For a dog with sensitive digestion, it is sensible to begin gradually. Choose one natural chew and observe the response. At least initially, a lower-fat option may be preferable, as excessive fat can upset some dogs’ digestion. Monitor stools, gas, itching, ears, appetite and general wellbeing. If no problems appear, the range can be expanded slowly.

One unsuitable chew does not mean that no chew will suit your dog. Allow the digestive system a few calm days and, when appropriate, try a different option.

Size and firmness must suit the dog

A chew that works for a large dog with a powerful bite may not suit a small dog. In the same way, a dog that gulps food may not be safe with a small chew or one that breaks apart quickly.

When making a choice, consider:

whether the dog chews calmly or tries to swallow large pieces;

the strength of the dog’s bite;

the dog’s size;

whether the dog is a puppy, an adult or a senior;

whether the dog has sensitive digestion;

whether a short activity or a longer chewing session is needed.

Chews should be offered under supervision, especially when a dog is trying a new product for the first time. Fresh drinking water should always be available.

Natural does not mean unlimited

A natural chew is generally a more transparent choice than a heavily processed product with an unclear ingredient list. That does not mean it can be given without limits. A treat is still a treat.

Too many chews can affect digestion, body weight and the dog’s appetite for regular meals. Treats should also be included when considering the dog’s total daily food intake.

A useful principle is simple: a chew should support the dog’s wellbeing, not replace a balanced main diet.

When is a good time to offer a chew?

A chew can work well when you would like a little peace and the dog needs a calm activity. Suitable moments may include:

in the evening before bedtime;

after a walk;

during a quiet period at home;

on a rainy day;

when the dog needs activity without further excitement;

after visitors or another exciting event, when the dog needs help settling.

A chew does not have to be used only as a reward. In our view, it can be part of a dog’s calm daily rhythm.

Summary: a good chew supports a dog’s natural needs

Chewing is a natural and often calming activity for dogs. A suitable chew can provide occupation, support relaxation, offer mental stimulation and contribute to mechanical dental cleaning. Chews with hair may also provide a different texture and may support normal digestive function, although individual tolerance varies.

The most important thing is to choose a product that suits your own dog. Consider the composition, raw material, origin, size and firmness. For a dog with sensitive digestion, favour simple natural chews and introduce new choices slowly, one at a time. It is also worth being cautious with products whose origin or ingredient information is unclear.

FendaF receives several offers from manufacturers outside Europe, but we have decided to prioritise quality. We choose our partners in Europe and require the raw materials to be of European origin.

If you are unsure which chew might suit your dog, ask us for advice. We can help you consider the dog’s size, age, chewing style, digestion and individual needs.

FendaF believes in informed choices

The purpose of the FendaF blog is not to tell you what you must do.
