A dog with sensitive digestion may need a slightly different approach. If your dog often has soft stools, gas, vomiting, poor appetite, or an easily upset stomach, sensitive digestion may be part of the picture. This does not always mean one specific disease, nor does it mean that the dog \u201ccannot tolerate anything\u201d. Digestion is often influenced by several factors at once: food quality, microbiome balance, stress, routine, environment and the dog\u2019s overall resilience.<\/p>\n

Integrative veterinarian Dr Katie Woodley emphasizes that the gut is not only a place where digestion happens. It is closely connected with the immune system, skin, mood and the balance of the whole body. When the gut stays irritated for a long time, this can show up in very different ways: digestive problems in one dog, itching, ear problems, restlessness or general sensitivity in another.<\/p>\n

It is still important to remember that severe, recurring or persistent diarrhoea, blood in the stool, frequent vomiting, weight loss, lethargy or pain are reasons to contact a veterinarian.<\/p>\n

1. Start with food that is suitable and good quality<\/h2>\n

With sensitive digestion, the first thing worth looking at is what the dog eats every day. The question is not only whether the food is dry or wet, but what its quality and composition are and whether it suits that particular dog. Every body is different, and what works well for one dog may not work for another. There is no need to become stuck on the idea that a dog must eat one specific type of food simply because it is generally considered the \u201cbest\u201d.<\/p>\n

Your dog\u2019s digestion and body are individual, so the food should be chosen according to what actually works best for that dog\u2019s digestion.<\/p>\n

Dr Katie Woodley strongly favours fresh and minimally processed food in her approach. At FendaF, we have nothing against that and we also consider fresh food a very good way to support a dog. At the same time, our own experience has shown us that dry food is not automatically bad, wet food is not automatically better and raw food is not automatically the best. Quality, balance and how well the dog digests and absorbs the food matter.<\/p>\n

A good food should be easy for the dog to digest, contain quality protein sources and suit the dog\u2019s age, activity level, health and sensitivities. Some dogs do very well on high-quality dry food. Others may do better with wet food or a combination of dry and wet food. For some dogs, lightly moistening the food or adding simple digestion-supporting foods can also help, but any new addition should be introduced gradually.<\/p>\n

If your dog has a sensitive stomach, it is also sensible to be cautious with abrupt food changes. The first transition to a new food can be done calmly, usually over several days to a couple of weeks, starting with a smaller amount of the new food mixed into the old. This makes it easier to observe how the dog\u2019s digestion responds. Feedback from customers switching to Winner Plus has been very positive, and we have repeatedly heard that some dogs have tolerated even a faster transition without vomiting or diarrhoea.<\/p>\n

With a dog that has very sensitive digestion, however, we generally recommend watching the dog\u2019s response closely and, when possible, changing food gradually.<\/p>\n

2. The microbiome needs balance<\/h2>\n

A dog\u2019s gut contains a large community of bacteria and other microorganisms that influence digestion, immunity and nutrient absorption. When this balance is disrupted, dysbiosis can develop. It may show up as gas, soft stools, diarrhoea, bad breath or simply as generally sensitive digestion.<\/p>\n

The microbiome can be affected by courses of antibiotics, prolonged stress, a very one-sided or unsuitable diet, sudden food changes and some medications. Antibiotics are sometimes completely necessary, but after a course the dog may benefit from gentle digestive support. Probiotics and prebiotic fibres can be useful during recovery, but they should be chosen thoughtfully. Not every supplement suits every dog, and with sensitive digestion it often makes sense to start with a small amount.<\/p>\n

Depending on the source and the individual dog, recovery of the microbiome after antibiotics may take months or even longer.<\/p>\n

3. Stress can upset the gut very quickly<\/h2>\n

Many dog owners have noticed that their dog\u2019s stomach can become upset after boarding, travel, visitors, moving house, a new family member or another change in routine. What many people do not realise is that the gut and brain are closely connected, so stress can affect digestion very directly. Even if there are no obvious symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhoea, stress can still influence the microbiome.<\/p>\n

Stress can also raise cortisol levels, alter the gut microbiome and increase gastrointestinal sensitivity. In one dog this may appear as soft stools, in another as vomiting, poor appetite or restlessness.<\/p>\n

That is why simply changing food is not always enough for sensitive digestion. Sometimes the dog also needs more routine, a calmer environment and a predictable daily rhythm.<\/p>\n

  • Keep feeding times as consistent as possible.<\/li>\n
  • Avoid making several changes at the same time.<\/li>\n
  • Give the dog a calm place to rest.<\/li>\n
  • Include gentle movement in the day.<\/li>\n
  • Use enrichment such as sniffing games, sniff walks or food puzzles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Some dogs may also benefit from calming herbal support such as chamomile or valerian, but age, health status and possible medications should always be taken into account. Ask a knowledgeable professional for guidance when needed.<\/p>\n

    4. Environmental load can be reduced with small steps<\/h2>\n

    Dr Woodley also highlights environmental factors. Dogs come into contact every day with cleaning products, garden chemicals, air pollution, possible residues in drinking water and other irritants. We cannot control or avoid everything, but we can reduce unnecessary exposure.<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Use gentler, more natural cleaning products at home where practical.<\/li>\n
    • Rinse floors several times after using stronger chemical cleaners.<\/li>\n
    • Avoid letting the dog come into contact with freshly treated lawns or garden chemicals.<\/li>\n
    • Offer good-quality drinking water when possible. Bottled water is not automatically better than tap water.<\/li>\n
    • Choose foods and treats with a clear, understandable ingredient list and without unnecessary synthetic colours, flavours, aromas or preservatives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      There is no need to take this to extremes. The idea is simply to reduce unnecessary irritants as much as reasonably possible, especially when you have a dog with sensitive digestion.<\/p>\n

      5. Treats and supplements should not overload a sensitive gut<\/h2>\n

      With sensitive digestion in dogs, even a \u201csmall treat\u201d can sometimes be the reason the gut reacts again. If the dog receives several different treats, table scraps, chews and supplements during the day, it quickly becomes difficult to work out what suits the dog and what does not.<\/p>\n

      A useful principle is simplicity. Choose one suitable treat at a time and observe the response. If the gut is sensitive, clear single-ingredient natural treats can make life easier, while unnecessary colourings, artificial flavours and vague ingredient lists are best avoided. It is also worth paying attention to where treats come from. There have been many complaints and product recalls, especially in the United States, involving some products made with ingredients from China, so our own preference is for treats made from European-origin raw materials.<\/p>\n

      A possible price difference is not worth poor wellbeing or health problems that may eventually require a veterinary visit. All treats in the FendaF range are made from European-origin raw materials, and we choose our partners carefully. Our own dogs also test the products before they reach the shop. If our four-legged testers, and their digestion, do not approve, the product does not make the cut.<\/p>\n

      The same applies to supplements. Probiotics, prebiotics, bone broth or another supportive option may help digestion, but adding everything at once is rarely useful. Start with one thing and give the body time to respond. More is not automatically better. One well-chosen option is often better than several poor ones.<\/p>\n

      Summary: sensitive digestion needs a calm, whole-picture approach<\/h2>\n

      Supporting a dog with sensitive digestion is rarely about finding one quick fix. What usually helps most is a calm overall approach: suitable high-quality food, a stable routine, support for the microbiome, less stress and simpler ingredient lists. Changes in the microbiome take time. Integrative veterinarians, including Dr Katie Woodley, have discussed that recovery can sometimes take considerably longer than the period during which the problem developed.<\/p>\n

      In other words, if a dog has had sensitive digestion for a long time, improvement may also take time. There are rarely instant solutions in health, but even small steps can make a meaningful difference to a pet\u2019s wellbeing.<\/p>\n

      Dry food, wet food or a combination of the two can all be suitable if the food is good quality and the dog digests it well. What matters is observing the dog\u2019s overall wellbeing, stool, appetite, skin, ears and behaviour.<\/p>\n
