What does their breathing look like while asleep, how quickly do they get up, how much do they drink, what colour are their gums, and has that small soft lump on the left side been there unchanged for a year?

The greatest value of an at-home health check is not that the owner starts making diagnoses. Quite the opposite. The aim is to know your dog’s normal condition well enough that a change stands out sooner.

A calm 5–10 minute check once a week is a practical routine. In an older dog or a dog with a chronic condition, some parameters may be worth monitoring more often, according to your veterinarian’s advice.

1. Start with the whole dog, not the thermometer

Before measuring anything, simply look at your dog. Are they moving, sitting and lying down as usual? Do they come to meals with the same enthusiasm? Has the length of walks, use of stairs, sleep or interest in play changed?

A useful home “baseline” includes more than numbers: trends in body weight and muscle mass, appetite, water intake, urination, defecation, movement, sleep and behaviour. A single day may mean very little, but a slowly developing change may become visible before a number looks alarming.

2. Body temperature

Merck Veterinary Manual lists the average body temperature of dogs as 38.3–39.2 °C. VCA uses 37.7–39.2 °C as a normal range. One number never tells the whole story: stress, excitement, environmental temperature and physical activity can affect the reading.

The most reliable home measurement is usually a rectal digital thermometer. If the dog is very anxious, painful or cannot be handled safely, there is no point forcing restraint simply to obtain a number.

A temperature above 40 °C or below 37.2 °C warrants prompt veterinary assessment. The same applies when a milder temperature change occurs together with lethargy, tremors, difficulty breathing, marked pain or another clear sign of illness.

3. Pulse and breathing

A dog’s pulse can usually be felt over the femoral artery on the inside of the thigh. In some dogs with heart disease, not every heartbeat produces a pulse that reaches the femoral artery.

Count beats for 15 seconds and multiply by four. Merck gives a general resting range of about 70–120 beats per minute, although small dogs often have faster heart rates and large or athletic dogs may be slower.

Breathing is best assessed while the dog is asleep or resting and not panting. According to Merck, a normal resting respiratory rate in dogs is usually about 18–34 breaths per minute. Count chest rises for one minute, or for 30 seconds and multiply by two.

The pattern matters more than a single number. If your dog usually sleeps at 18–22 breaths per minute and suddenly measures 35–40 repeatedly, that deserves attention even if the dog does not yet look dramatically ill.

4. Gums, mucous membranes and capillary refill time

Lift the lip and look at the gums. Many dogs have pink gums, but pigmentation can be completely normal. The important thing is to know what is normal for your dog.

If there is enough unpigmented gum surface, you can check capillary refill time: press a finger on the gum until the spot briefly becomes pale, release, and see how quickly the colour returns. A typical time is about 1–2 seconds.

Pale or white, blue, grey or clearly yellow mucous membranes, as well as a clearly delayed capillary refill time, may indicate a problem that needs prompt assessment. This is not a home diagnostic test, but one piece of the puzzle together with the dog’s overall condition.

5. Head: eyes, ears, nose and mouth

Look at the eyes: are they clear, is there more discharge than usual, are the pupils the same size, and is the dog squinting or rubbing the eye? Eye pain, sudden cloudiness or injury should be checked quickly.

The ears should smell like they normally do for your dog and should not have new redness, obvious discharge, swelling or intense itching. A healthy dog’s nose may be wet or dry. A dry, warm nose by itself does not prove a fever.

Look in the mouth as far as the dog safely allows. Check the gums, teeth, tartar, broken teeth, ulcers, foreign material and any new bad breath. Very strong halitosis is not simply “dog smell”; it may indicate an oral or other health problem.

6. Skin, coat, hydration and any new lumps

Run your hands systematically over the dog’s body, for example from head to tail and on both sides. This reduces the chance that the same area is missed every time. Look for redness, wounds, scaling, moist areas, hair loss, strong odour, ticks and new or changing masses.

The skin-tent test can give a clue about hydration, but it should not be treated as an exact dehydration measurement. In an older or very lean dog, skin elasticity may be reduced even with normal hydration. Look at gum moisture, thirst, urination, overall condition and changes in body weight as well.

For a new lump, take a photo, measure its diameter and record the location. Touch alone cannot reliably tell you whether a mass is a lipoma, cyst, inflammatory lesion or something else. A new, rapidly growing, bleeding, ulcerated, painful or irregular mass should be examined by a veterinarian. Even a stable lump is worth mentioning at the next visit.

7. Abdomen, movement, paws and “does anything hurt?”

Palpate the abdomen gently, without pressing deeply. You do not need to “find organs” at home. The aim is to notice whether the dog tenses, looks toward the abdomen, tries to move away or shows pain. A suddenly enlarged or painful abdomen, especially with restlessness, unproductive retching or weakness, is an emergency.

Watch the dog walk and see how they rise, sit and turn. You can compare muscle tone, heat and swelling on both sides of the body. There is no need to force joints through a range of motion. If movement causes resistance or pain, stop and seek assessment if needed.

Finally, inspect the paws: between the toes, nails, pads, cracks, redness, swelling, foreign bodies or tenderness. Problems often hide between the toes where they are not obvious from above.

When home monitoring is not enough

An at-home check is for noticing changes, not for “waiting a little longer” in an emergency. Seek urgent veterinary care for situations including difficulty breathing or blue/grey mucous membranes; collapse, altered consciousness or seizures; pale or white gums with weakness or a rapid pulse; a suddenly enlarged or severely painful abdomen; major bleeding or blood in vomit/stool together with poor general condition; inability to urinate; temperature above 40 °C or below 37.2 °C; or sudden severe pain, trauma or rapid deterioration.

Do you need to measure everything every week?

No. A home health check does not need to become a laboratory day. For most healthy adult dogs, a regular systematic look and hands-on check, together with knowing what is normal for that dog, matters more. It is useful to learn how to measure temperature, pulse and breathing while the dog is healthy so that you have a comparison point on a sick day.

Adult dogs still need regular veterinary wellness exams. Merck recommends at least one thorough exam each year for healthy adults, and usually twice yearly or more often for senior dogs depending on need.

An integrative view: trends often speak before a diagnosis

An integrative approach often looks at the dog as a whole: not just one symptom, but sleep, movement, digestion, body weight, muscle mass, skin, stress, nutrition and behaviour together. In that sense, regular home observation fits very well with conventional preventive medicine. Both aim to notice change before it becomes a large problem.

This does not mean every small change points to hidden disease or that the owner should interpret every measurement. The value lies in the pattern: what changed, when, how quickly and together with what else. Those observations can give a veterinarian a far better starting point than simply “he hasn’t quite been himself for a few days”.

In summary

An at-home health check is most useful when it is a calm routine rather than a hunt for disease. If you know your dog’s usual breathing, pulse, weight, movement, gum colour, skin and coat condition, and which lumps have been unchanged for a long time, new changes are much easier to notice.

Write observations down and take photos when useful. At home, you do not need to decide what the diagnosis is. It is enough to notice: this is new, this has changed, or this is not normal for my dog.

Related FendaF reading: Sarcopenia or muscle loss, Water – how much should a dog drink?, Subcutaneous lumps and bumps, and Paw pads and their care.

Sources

Merck Veterinary Manual: Normal Physiological Values for Dogs

Merck Veterinary Manual: Routine Health Care of Dogs

Merck Veterinary Manual: Initial Triage and Resuscitation of Small Animal Emergency Patients

Merck Veterinary Manual: The Fluid Resuscitation Plan in Animals

VCA: Giving Your Dog a Thorough Home Check-up

VCA: Taking Your Pet’s Temperature

AAHA: Signs of Cancer in Dogs and Cats

How well do you actually know what your dog is like when everything is normal?
