I know that thought very well myself. Oscar struggled with itching on and off for about a year and a half. Changing his food helped, damp weather made things worse again, and at one point it seemed that his itching decreased considerably after adding diatomaceous earth powder. That is our real experience, but with what I know today I would immediately add one important sentence: improvement in one dog does not by itself prove what caused the itching or which change solved it.

Itching is a symptom. It may be caused by dry or irritated skin, fleas or mites, yeast or a bacterial infection, a food reaction, an environmental allergy, contact irritation or several factors at once. That is why I prefer to use the 30-day idea as a structured observation period rather than a promise that the problem will be gone forever within a month.

The original article was inspired by Dana Scott’s 30-day plan, which focused on omega-3 fatty acids, probiotics and regular bathing. All three still make sense in today’s approach, but the details need more precision.

First: why is the dog itching at all?

Modern dermatology usually does not start with the question “which allergy medicine should I choose?”, but with whether there is something behind the itching that can be identified and treated directly. AAHA guidelines recommend looking at the history and seasonality, checking for parasites, performing skin cytology and scrapings when appropriate, and examining the ears. Secondary bacterial and Malassezia infections can themselves amplify itching and need to be addressed in parallel.

Atopic dermatitis is essentially a diagnosis of exclusion. Allergy testing does not prove that a dog “has atopic dermatitis”; it is used mainly when allergen-specific immunotherapy is being planned. Food allergy also cannot be reliably confirmed with blood or hair tests. The practical standard is an elimination diet followed by a controlled challenge with the previous food.

If you want to look more deeply at the logic behind the causes of itching, also read Itching is not always an allergy. If the skin is greasy, strongly odorous, red or darkly pigmented, it may also be worth reading the article on Malassezia yeast infection.

Does a 30-day plan make sense at all?

Yes, if it is used as a supportive framework. Thirty days is long enough to begin noticing a pattern, but too short to rule out, for example, food allergy or to judge the final outcome of many chronic skin problems. It is especially important not to make ten changes at once if your goal is to understand what actually helped.

If the dog is very uncomfortable, a combined approach may of course make more sense. In that case, the first goal is to get the itching and inflammation under control and then calmly investigate what triggers the flare-ups. Using medication should not mean that the search for the underlying cause has ended. Likewise, using natural supportive measures does not mean that diagnosis can be skipped.

1. Omega-3: useful support, but not “double whatever the bottle says”

Omega-3 fatty acids, especially EPA and DHA, are used in dogs to support the skin barrier and inflammatory processes. The 2026 ICADA guideline regards essential fatty acids as adjunctive support in atopic dermatitis: their effect on itching and skin lesions is generally modest, but some dogs may benefit and they may reduce the need for other medication. They are not a good tool for rapid control of an acute flare.

Dose is an important nuance. “1500 mg of fish oil” does not tell you very much, because products can contain very different amounts of EPA + DHA.

If the goal is to use omega-3 at a higher therapeutic intake, look specifically at the EPA + DHA amount and take into account the dog’s body weight, dietary fat content, digestion, pancreatitis risk and other medications.

For a deeper look at omega-3, see Omega-3 fatty acids and how they are often used incorrectly.

2. Probiotics and the gut-skin axis: interesting, but not a finished answer

There is a real connection between the gut and the skin, and studies have found microbiome differences in dogs with atopic dermatitis compared with healthy dogs. That makes probiotics a very interesting area of research. However, “give twice as much probiotic and the itching will go away” is not currently an evidence-based rule.

A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis found only five suitable canine studies, and overall the effect of probiotics on clinical atopic dermatitis scores was not statistically significant. On the other hand, some newer individual studies have found improvement. So the topic is far from dead; the role of strain, dose, combination and the individual dog is still being worked out.

Integrative veterinarians sometimes discuss the idea that an imbalanced or “leaky” gut could reduce the amount of DAO enzyme that breaks down histamine and thereby contribute to itching. In dogs, however, that chain is too straightforward to present as established. Histamine does play a role in allergic reactions, but there is not yet enough basis to present this specific DAO pathway as a proven mechanism.

When choosing a probiotic, the specific strain, viability, shelf stability and whether the product has dog-specific background matter more. “More” is not automatically “better”. See also Beneficial bacteria and probiotics for dogs.

3. Bathing: there is solid practical logic behind this recommendation

Regular bathing can genuinely help an itchy dog. The ICADA 2026 guideline notes that bathing with a mild, non-irritating shampoo may remove allergens and debris from the skin surface, increase skin hydration and reduce itching in some dogs. For routine care, bathing about once a week is often reasonable, while during an active flare more frequent bathing may be useful for a short period.

That does not mean every itchy dog should be shampooed every other day for a month. Some shampoos are drying, some dogs react to a specific ingredient, and some skin conditions require a medicated shampoo instead. “Natural” or “organic” does not automatically mean gentler. Essential oils and plant extracts can also irritate sensitive skin.

If cytology confirms a bacterial or Malassezia infection, a veterinarian may recommend an antimicrobial shampoo. Chlorhexidine is one commonly used ingredient, but it too can cause irritation or a contact reaction in some dogs. If the dog suddenly becomes much itchier after bathing, rinse the product off and do not assume that “it has to get worse before it gets better”.

For more detail on bathing, see Bathing your dog.

Food: 30 days is often too short to draw a firm conclusion

If the itching is year-round or is accompanied by recurring ear infections, paw licking or gastrointestinal symptoms, a food reaction should definitely be considered. But casually switching foods is not the same as a diagnostic elimination diet.

AAHA recommends a food trial lasting 4-12 weeks, followed by a challenge with the previous food after a positive response to confirm whether the improvement was truly food-related. In practice, 8 weeks is often used, and some dogs need even longer. Every treat, chew, flavoured medication and “just one little bite” counts.

Therefore, failure of a 30-day plan does not mean food has no role. Likewise, improvement during the first week does not prove that you immediately found the “right protein”.

What about medication?

I personally do not like reaching for medication immediately. But the severity of the problem has to be taken into account. Severe itching itself damages the skin barrier, disrupts sleep, promotes secondary infections and can make a dog genuinely miserable. Sometimes rapid control of itching is a very important part of treatment.

Depending on the situation, conventional veterinary medicine may use glucocorticoids, oclacitinib, lokivetmab, ciclosporin and topical treatments, among other options. Each has its own benefits, drawbacks and appropriate patient. FendaF’s point is not to make “medication” and “natural solution” compete with one another, but to ask: what helps the dog feel better right now, and what can we do at the same time to reduce the causes of future flare-ups?

If you want to look separately at the risks and benefits of oclacitinib, read Apoquel and its safety.

A practical 30-day plan

If you still want to run a calm 30-day trial, this is how I would do it based on what we know today:

Day 0: take photos of the skin and ears and note how much the dog scratches, licks or chews each day. Even a simple 0-10 itch scale is useful.

Review your parasite-control plan. No skin-support strategy will solve flea allergy if the dog continues to receive flea bites.

If the skin has an odour, greasiness, pustules, crusts, moist lesions or ear problems, have the skin checked by a veterinarian before a major home trial and use cytology if needed.

Choose one good omega-3 source and look at the EPA + DHA amount, not just the total mass of fish oil. For a higher therapeutic intake, discuss the amount with your veterinarian.

If you add a probiotic, choose one product with a clear composition and give it consistently. Do not automatically double the amount simply because the dog is itchy.

Bathe the dog with a mild, moisturising dog shampoo about once a week or according to the skin’s needs. During an active flare, a veterinarian may temporarily recommend more frequent bathing.

Do not add five new supplements, three new treats and a new main food in the same week if you want to understand what made a difference.

Every 7 days, compare the photos and itch score. If the trend is improving, that is useful information for your veterinarian too. If the itching is increasing, look for the cause rather than simply adding another product.

When should you not wait 30 days?

the skin is broken, wet, purulent or very painful;

the dog has severe ear pain, a head tilt or discharge from the ear;

facial swelling, hives, difficulty breathing or another sign of an acute allergic reaction develops;

the itching is so severe that the dog cannot sleep or injures itself;

fever, lethargy, loss of appetite or other general signs appear;

the problem keeps returning despite consistent care or has lasted for weeks or months.

The integrative view: a skin problem does not live only on the skin

Here I am still very much aligned with the integrative way of thinking: it makes sense to look at the skin together with nutrition, digestion, the microbiome, stress, the environment and the immune system. The skin barrier is not separate wallpaper, but a living immune organ. This does not mean that every case of itching “starts in the gut”, but with a recurring problem it is reasonable to look at the whole picture rather than only the scratch itself.

At the same time, itching should not be romanticised as the body “detoxing” or something that has to be endured before healing can happen. An itchy dog is uncomfortable. Looking for the cause and relieving symptoms can proceed perfectly well side by side.

In summary

I still like Dana Scott’s 30-day idea because it encourages consistency: supporting the dog with fatty acids, paying attention to the gut and caring for the skin. But I would no longer call it a “30-day solution”. I would call it a 30-day trial that can provide very useful information.

If the dog improves, think about what exactly changed. If the dog does not improve, that is not proof that “natural approaches do not work” or that medication is the only next step. It means the diagnostic tree needs to be opened again. Sometimes the answer is fleas. But sometimes yeast. Sometimes its food. And sometimes atopic dermatitis. And quite often, annoyingly, the answer has several parts.

Sources used

ICADA 2026 – Treatment of Canine Atopic Dermatitis: Updated Guidelines: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/vde.70128 – bathing, fatty acids, skin barrier and multimodal treatment

AAHA 2023 – Management of Allergic Skin Diseases in Dogs and Cats: https://www.aaha.org/resources/2023-aaha-management-of-allergic-skin-diseases-in-dogs-and-cats-guidelines/ – diagnostic algorithm, secondary infections and food trials

Merck Veterinary Manual – Allergies in Dogs: https://www.merckvetmanual.com/dog-owners/skin-disorders-of-dogs/allergies-in-dogs – food allergy and elimination diet

Systematic review and meta-analysis of probiotics in canine atopic dermatitis (2025): https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40603066/ – overall evidence for probiotics

Randomized trial of probiotic/nutraceutical supplement in pruritic dogs (2024): https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38338095/ – gut-skin axis and clinical itching

Dana Scott – inspiration for the original article: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kgTqyukpKQ – integrative 30-day framework

When a dog itches day after day, it is very easy to start looking for one thing that will finally “make it go away”.
