I know very caring dog owners who have not bathed their dog for years because “dogs should not be washed too often” or simply because the dog does not enjoy the process. Faddy and Oscar do not exactly perform somersaults when they hear it is bath time either, but they know the “supa-supa” cue and walk into the shower on their own.

Modern dermatology has moved a long way beyond the old idea that a dog should only be bathed a couple of times a year. Bathing can simply be hygiene, but in a dog with itchy, allergic, oily or microbially affected skin it can also be a genuinely important part of the treatment plan. At the same time, more is not always better: the wrong product, inadequate rinsing or an ingredient that does not suit the individual dog can make the skin more irritated instead.

Why can bathing genuinely help?

Bathing removes dirt, pollen, dust, dead skin cells, excess sebum and other particles from the coat and skin surface. The 2026 ICADA guideline for dogs with atopic dermatitis notes that regular bathing with lukewarm water and a mild, non-irritating shampoo can improve skin hydration, soothe the skin and reduce allergens and microbes on the surface. In studies, the effect on itching has generally been moderate and often short-lived, but some dogs get very clear relief from it.

This fits very well with what I have seen with Oscar for years. When his itching starts to increase, a bath often helps noticeably, and the effect can last for a week or two. That is Oscar’s individual treatment response, not a promise that every itchy dog will respond in the same way. But “it does not work for everyone” does not make an effective measure worthless. The same individual variation applies to medication and other treatments.

Bathing has another very practical advantage: it is a good moment to check the whole dog. Redness, dandruff, crusts, moist patches, lumps, ticks, fleas, changes in odour or painful areas are easier to notice.

How often should you bathe a dog?

There is no single ideal interval for every dog. Bathing needs depend on coat type, activity, environment, skin condition and whether the bath is for hygiene or treatment.

Healthy dog with little dirt: bathe when the dog is genuinely dirty, greasy or smells unpleasant. For many dogs, an interval of several weeks to a few months works well.

Long-haired dog or dog with a dense undercoat: may need more regular bathing and definitely more thorough drying, because moisture can remain trapped under the coat.

Atopic or allergic dog: according to ICADA 2026, bathing about once a week with a mild, non-irritating shampoo can be a useful supportive measure. In some dogs, other topical care products are used and bathing may be less frequent.

Bacterial pyoderma or Malassezia: a medicated shampoo is often used 2-3 times a week, or according to another schedule prescribed by the veterinarian. Here, the diagnosis and the specific active ingredient determine the frequency, not a general “bathing rule”.

Mud, seawater, heavy dirt or another specific exposure: rinsing or bathing may make sense immediately afterwards instead of waiting for a calendar date.

The most important thing is to watch the skin itself. If more frequent bathing makes the skin dry, red or itchier, the product, the frequency or both need to be changed. If the dog clearly feels better after bathing and the skin remains healthy, there is no reason to fear bathing simply because of the old “you will wash away the natural oils” myth.

Which shampoo should you choose?

For routine washing of healthy skin, I prefer a mild shampoo made for dogs. “pH-balanced” sounds good in marketing, but canine skin pH is not one fixed number. Studies have measured quite a wide range in adult dogs, and pH also varies by body area, age and breed. So the suitability of a product should not be judged by a single pH number alone.

Human shampoo is not automatically poison, but it is designed for human hair and skin, not for a dog’s coat or skin that may have a dermatological problem. For routine use, a gentle product made for dogs is the simpler and more sensible choice. With medicated shampoos, the choice depends on the problem: is the goal to moisturise, reduce oiliness, control bacteria or control yeast?

Chlorhexidine: useful, but not “suitable for everyone”

Chlorhexidine is a very common antiseptic in veterinary dermatology and an active ingredient that has been shown to work against both superficial bacterial infections and Malassezia. That means there is no reason to demonise it in general. At the same time, good average tolerability does not mean that no individual dog can react to it.

In one randomised study of 67 dogs with Malassezia dermatitis, both 3% chlorhexidine shampoo and a 2% miconazole + 2% chlorhexidine shampoo were effective. Four dogs in the chlorhexidine group had minor adverse effects. My own dog Oscar and one client’s dog developed very severe itching/rash after a shampoo containing chlorhexidine, and in Oscar’s case the reaction stopped after the product was washed off and he was bathed again with another shampoo. That is why, with a sensitive dog, I would not simply assume that “a medicated shampoo has to make things worse at first”.

If a dog becomes clearly redder, itchier or more restless immediately after a new shampoo, rinse the product off thoroughly. Chlorhexidine does not belong in the eyes or inside the ear canal.

Preparation before bathing

A good bath starts before you turn on the water. Prepare everything in advance so the dog does not have to stand wet in the bath or shower while you look for supplies.

a mild dog-safe shampoo or a medicated shampoo prescribed by the veterinarian;

a non-slip mat or a large towel in the shower, especially for an older or unsteady dog;

a cup, jug or shower head with adjustable pressure;

a soft washcloth for the face;

at least one large absorbent towel, several for a thick coat;

a brush or comb;

if needed, a dryer using cool or lukewarm air;

treats or a lick mat if they help make bathing calmer.

If you use a lick mat, choose a filling that suits your dog and count its calories. If you use peanut butter, always check that it does not contain xylitol.

Bathing a dog step by step

1. Brush before bathing

Remove loose hair, dirt and tangles. A wet tangle often tightens further, and a dense undercoat can hold moisture close to the skin.

2. Make the surface safe

Slipping can turn a bath into a stressful experience very quickly. A rubber mat or towel gives the dog secure footing. This is especially important for an older dog.

3. Wet the coat slowly and thoroughly

Use lukewarm, not hot, water. Start with the body and avoid directing a strong jet of water straight at the face. A dense or water-repellent coat needs time for the water to reach the skin properly.

4. Apply shampoo evenly over the body

Follow the instructions for the specific product. With an ordinary bathing shampoo, “the more, the cleaner” is not a good rule. A medicated shampoo may be worth diluting first if the product instructions allow it or the veterinarian recommends it. Merck notes that dilution can improve distribution and reduce the risk of irritation. I actually dilute all shampoos intended for dogs.

5. Give medicated shampoo the required contact time

If the label says 5-10 minutes, 30 seconds of lathering does not give the same result. At the same time, do not let the dog get cold while wet.

6. Clean the face with a cloth

Do not pour water over the dog’s head. Clean around the eyes, nose and ears with a damp cloth. Avoid getting shampoo or a medicated product into the eyes or ear canal.

7. Rinse longer than you think you need to

Shampoo residue is a very common cause of irritation. Rinse the armpits, belly, between the toes, skin folds and thick undercoat too. Stop only when the water runs completely clear and the coat no longer feels slippery with product.

8. Get the dog genuinely dry

Pat the coat dry instead of rubbing. With thick, long or hot-spot-prone coats, use a dryer on a low temperature if needed and keep it moving. Hot air can irritate the skin.

9. End on a good note

A treat, a game, calm praise or a short walk can make bath day more predictable and less unpleasant. If the dog becomes very stressed, it is better to pause than to fight through to the end.

Integrative finishing rinses: what can you try at home?

If the dog’s skin is intact and the goal is simply to soothe or freshen it, simple finishing rinses are also used in integrative practice. Here it is important to distinguish practical use from clinically proven treatment. These rinses do not replace diagnosis and treatment of a bacterial infection, Malassezia, parasites or severe allergic inflammation.

Diluted vinegar rinse

In Dr Karen Becker’s practical guide, the finishing rinse uses 1 cup of vinegar in about 1 gallon, or 3.8 litres, of water. The mixture is poured over the coat from the neck down, massaged close to the skin and usually not rinsed off again with clean water.

This is an integrative home-care measure, not a proven treatment for atopic dermatitis or infection. Do not use vinegar on broken, very inflamed or wet skin because the acid can sting strongly. Avoid the eyes, face and ears. On first use, testing a small area is sensible.

Herbal tea rinse

For general itching, Becker’s guide also uses a tea rinse: 5 bags of green tea, peppermint, chamomile or tulsi tea in about 2 litres of very hot water, steeped for roughly 3 hours, cooled completely and poured over the coat from the neck down after bathing. This is also usually left on rather than rinsed away.

The same rule applies here: if the dog becomes redder or itchier, stop. “Natural” does not automatically mean a contact reaction is impossible.

If the dog has itchy or allergic skin

For an itchy dog, bathing can be one of the most practical supportive measures because it removes allergens and microbial load from the skin surface and can temporarily soothe the skin. ICADA 2026 recommends regular bathing with a mild, non-irritating shampoo and lukewarm water for atopic dermatitis. Some dogs do well with weekly bathing; in others, less frequent bathing is combined with topical moisturising or barrier-supporting products.

If itching is your main concern, also read Itchy dog: what can you realistically try in 30 days? That article explains separately when bathing is simply supportive and when it is time to look for parasites, infection, a food reaction or atopy.

If the skin has a strong smell, oiliness, crusts, pustules, wet patches or recurrent ear problems, it is not a good idea to keep trying one new shampoo after another. Cytology can quickly show whether bacteria or Malassezia are involved, after which the active ingredient can be chosen accordingly.

Hot spots and drying

Moisture control matters with hot spots. If a dog has a dense coat and stays wet close to the skin for a long time after bathing, this can create problems or worsen existing inflammation. That is why I dry a thick-coated, hot-spot-prone dog especially carefully after bathing.

See also Hot spot on a dog: what to do and why does it come back?.

Puppies, senior dogs and hairless dogs

Puppy: keep the first baths short, warm and positive. The skin of a very young puppy differs from adult skin, and excessive bathing is unnecessary.

Senior dog: a non-slip surface, shorter bathing time and good drying matter more than a “perfect spa day”. 2026 data also suggest that skin hydration may decrease with age.

Hairless or very short-coated dog: the skin is in more direct contact with the environment, and some dogs need more moisturising care after bathing.

Dense undercoat: the main issue is not bathing itself, but whether you can get the skin and undercoat genuinely dry afterwards.

When should you stop bathing and seek help?

the dog becomes very red or itchy immediately after the product is applied;

facial swelling, hives or breathing difficulty develops;

the skin is wet, purulent, very painful or extensively broken;

the dog has severe ear pain or a discharging ear infection;

itching and skin problems keep returning despite correct bathing;

you are using a medicated shampoo to treat an infection but the expected improvement does not appear within a few weeks.

FendaF’s practical bathing rule

If you take only one idea from this article, my rule would be this: bathe the dog as often as the skin and lifestyle require, but choose the right product, rinse very thoroughly and always watch your own dog’s response. The calendar is not more important than the dog.

If the dog is dirty or smells: bathe or rinse.

If an itchy dog consistently gets relief from bathing: use it deliberately as a supportive measure.

If the skin gets worse after bathing: do not force the “treatment” harder. Reassess the product and the diagnosis.

If you use a medicated shampoo: follow the instructions for the active ingredient, contact time and frequency, not the logic of an ordinary cosmetic shampoo.

If the dog has a thick coat or is prone to hot spots: drying is just as important as bathing.

In summary

Bathing a dog is not something to fear, nor a procedure that should follow one universal calendar. A healthy dog needs bathing according to lifestyle and coat. In an allergic or atopic dog, regular bathing can genuinely be an evidence-based part of skin support. In an infection, the right medicated shampoo can be a very important part of treatment.

My own experience with Oscar is why I never treat bathing as a trivial detail in an itchy dog. His skin tells us quite clearly when a bath is needed, and after bathing he often feels noticeably better. That does not mean every itch needs only shampoo. It means that skin care can be a simple, inexpensive and genuinely useful piece of a larger puzzle.

And if the dog finally steps out of the bathroom, shakes half the water onto the walls and looks at you as if you have violated the Geneva Convention, at least one thing is certain: next time, you already have a system.

Sources used

ICADA 2026 – Treatment of Canine Atopic Dermatitis: Updated Guidelines – regular bathing, atopic dermatitis, safety and frequency

AAHA 2023 – Management of Allergic Skin Diseases in Dogs and Cats – topical treatment, moisturising shampoos and infection control

Merck Veterinary Manual – Principles of Topical Treatment in Animals – use of medicated shampoos, contact time, dilution and monitoring for topical reactions

Merck Veterinary Manual – Atopic Dermatitis in Dogs – allergen load and bathing frequency

Maynard et al. 2011 – chlorhexidine vs miconazole/chlorhexidine in canine Malassezia dermatitis – randomised study of 67 dogs; efficacy and adverse effects

Schlake et al. 2022 – canine skin pH – variation in canine skin pH by age and body region

Lee et al. 2026 – Age-related evaluation of skin barrier parameters in retrievers – age-related changes in skin hydration

Bark & Whiskers 2025 – Splish, Splash – Your Pet’s Having a Bath! – practical integrative bathing guide

Bark & Whiskers – homemade healing rinses – practical integrative source for vinegar and herbal tea rinses

This time, let’s look at something very ordinary that still attracts a surprising amount of conflicting advice: bathing a dog.
