At one end, it is recommended for wounds, ears, eyes and even internal use. At the other, people say it should not be used at all. For FendaF, the most useful question is not “is colloidal silver good or bad?”, but a much more precise one: which product, in which place, for how long and for what kind of problem?

Our own experience is why I do not want to dismiss its use on the skin outright. I have seen very rapid improvement after colloidal silver both in my own dogs and in a client dog with a skin problem. At the same time, a good skin experience does not automatically mean that I would be willing to pour the same solution into a dog’s ear, drip it into the eye or give it internally. That is a very clear boundary for us.

What exactly is colloidal silver?

Colloidal silver is a liquid containing very small silver particles and, depending on the product, varying amounts of silver ions. This is where the first important nuance appears: not all “silver-containing” products are the same. A colloidal silver solution, a wound dressing containing silver ions, silver sulfadiazine and different nanosilver preparations differ in composition, concentration, effect and safety data.

Therefore, for example, a study in which a standardized silver-containing wound dressing improved healing outcomes in a human chronic wound cannot automatically be used as evidence that bottled colloidal silver solution treats a dog’s hot spot. That does not mean the solution could not work. It simply means the evidence has to be put in the right box.

What do we know about the antimicrobial effect of silver?

Silver has antimicrobial activity and is used in medicine in a variety of topical wound products. In human wound-care studies, results with silver-containing dressings have been inconsistent, but newer meta-analyses have found shorter healing times or a lower risk of infection in certain chronic wounds. At the same time, there is substantial heterogeneity between studies, and these are standardized wound-care products, not necessarily colloidal silver sprays.

There is much less clinical evidence for colloidal silver itself, especially in dogs. So the honest wording is this: the antimicrobial mechanism is plausible and there is clinical evidence for silver-based medical products, but that does not give us a universal dose or allow us to place every use of colloidal silver into the same category.

FendaF’s personal experience with skin use

Our own experience includes both Ossu and our acquaintance’s Staffordshire terrier, Neo. Every autumn in damp weather, Neo developed bump-like lesions on a hind paw that resembled small sores, and after colloidal silver was used, the skin improved very quickly in our observation. Later I also used it on Ossu’s hot spot: I clipped the hair away from the affected area, cleaned the skin and used colloidal silver. By the next day a scab had formed, and the day after that it came off.

This is documented practical experience and, for me, valuable information. Another important point is that with colloidal silver I saw faster improvement than, for example, with calendula tincture. Of course, that does not prove that colloidal silver works for every hot spot, wound or dog, nor that colloidal silver was the only factor responsible for healing. With the hot spot, clipping the hair, allowing the skin to dry and cleaning the affected area also mattered. But it would be just as wrong to pretend that the rapid response we observed did not happen simply because we do not have a canine RCT at hand.

Where does FendaF draw the line?

Route of use

FendaF boundary

Why?

Skin

Yes, locally and short-term in selected situations.

We have good practical experience and silver’s antimicrobial activity has a biological basis. This does not replace diagnosis of a deep, bite, puncture or severely inflamed wound.

Ear

We do not routinely recommend putting colloidal silver into the ear canal at home.

The cause of an ear problem may be yeast, bacteria, allergy, a foreign body or something else; the condition of the eardrum also matters. Some integrative sources recommend colloidal silver for the ear, but FendaF draws a more cautious line here.

Eye

We do not support putting colloidal silver directly into the eye without veterinary guidance.

The eye is a high-consequence area, and sterility and suitability of an ophthalmic product are critical. “Use around the face” is not the same as putting the solution into the eye.

Internal use

FendaF does not recommend it.

Benefits of systemic use have not been convincingly demonstrated, while silver accumulation, argyria and drug interactions have been described. The risk profile is completely different from use on a small area of skin.

What do integrative sources say?

There is no single unified position even among integrative sources today. The instructions for a 10 ppm SilverSol product sold in Dr. Judy Morgan’s online store allow both topical and internal use and recommend spraying the affected area externally 2–3 times a day. Bark & Whiskers materials have also recommended colloidal silver in the context of ear cleaning or care around the eyes.

At the same time, Dogs Naturally, which we used as a source for practical uses in the older version of this article, now publishes a much more critical discussion and especially advises avoiding internal use. This is a good reminder of why we do not build an article around a single source. An integrative source may provide a valuable practical idea, but we do not adopt every recommendation wholesale if we are not confident about its safety.

Internal use: FendaF’s answer is still “no”

The U.S. National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) states that evidence supporting the health claims made for colloidal silver is lacking and that oral use can lead to silver accumulating in tissues and to argyria. Interactions have also been described with certain antibiotics and thyroxine, along with possible effects on the kidneys, liver and nervous system.

These data come mainly from humans and other models, but with systemic use the important point is precisely that the substance no longer remains local on the skin surface. Because well-supported benefits of internal colloidal silver use in dogs are lacking, FendaF sees no reason to take that risk.

Ear: why are “a few drops” no longer our home recommendation?

Before putting anything into the ear, we need to know what we are actually trying to treat. Ear redness and discharge may be linked to yeast, bacteria, allergy, parasites, a foreign body or an already damaged eardrum.

Bark & Whiskers suggests colloidal silver as one possible ear-cleaning product, but the same source emphasizes elsewhere that when an ear infection is suspected, the cleaning routine should first be discussed with a veterinarian because the eardrum may be damaged.

For FendaF, that is enough reason not to give a universal “pour it into the ear” instruction.

Eye: skin around the eye is not the same as putting drops into the eye

For the eye, the boundary is even clearer. Integrative materials include recommendations to use colloidal silver to clean the skin around the eyes and, in some places, to put it directly into the eye.

FendaF does not recommend direct use in the eye as a general home-care instruction.

The reason is not only silver toxicology, but also the sterility of an ophthalmic preparation and the diagnosis of the eye disease. The U.S. FDA has warned sellers of colloidal-silver eye drops and noted that, with products administered to the eye, contamination or an unsuitable substance can cause irreversible injury, including loss of vision. That is a different risk class from local irritation on a small area of skin.

What about the Estonian Health Board warning?

In an earlier version of this article, we cited the position of the Estonian Health Board, the former Veterinary and Food Board and the Consumer Protection Board. The relevant Health Board notice is still available online, but it dates from 21 October 2015. It states that colloidal silver is not permitted for use in food supplements or skin disinfectants and that sales claims about treating or alleviating disease are regarded as misleading.

That regulatory information matters, but precision is needed here too. It does not mean that all medical wound products containing silver are prohibited or that silver has no antimicrobial activity. Product classification, the specific form of silver and the approved intended use are separate questions.

For that reason, FendaF does not automatically call an arbitrary colloidal silver solution an “approved disinfectant”.

FendaF’s practical boundary for skin use

Start with cleaning. A small superficial skin irritation or hot spot first needs control of hair and moisture and gentle cleaning with clean water or saline. Colloidal silver does not replace removal of dirt. Read more about wound cleaning in the FendaF article “Why an antiseptic may not be the best option for wound care”.

Use only locally and on a small area. If you choose colloidal silver, prefer a product with a known composition and follow its directions for external use. FendaF does not recommend home-made “stronger” solutions.

A product-specific guide, not a universal dose. Some 10 ppm integrative products instruct topical use 2–3 times a day. That does not mean the same frequency is suitable for every concentration or every product.

Set a short observation window. FendaF’s experience-based boundary: with a small superficial skin problem, we want to see a clear trend toward improvement within 24–48 hours. If there is no such trend, simply applying colloidal silver for longer and in larger amounts is not useful.

Reduce once the acute phase is under control. When redness, moisture and irritation decrease, there is no need to continue the same intensive antimicrobial approach indefinitely. Move to gentler care if needed.

Escalation signs. A deep or puncture wound, bite, marked swelling, pus, bad smell, increasing pain, a rapidly spreading lesion, fever/lethargy, or a condition that does not improve within 24–48 hours needs veterinary assessment.

In summary

Colloidal silver does not fit neatly into either the “miracle cure” or “complete nonsense” box. Silver has antimicrobial activity, silver-based products are used in medicine, and FendaF has very good practical experience with local use of colloidal silver on the skin. At the same time, clinical evidence for colloidal silver in dogs is limited, and experience with one route of use does not give us the right to extend the recommendation to the ear, eye or internal use.

So FendaF’s boundary today is quite simple. Colloidal silver may have a place in a small superficial skin problem if use is local, short-term and the observation window is clear. We do not automatically pour it into the ear. Also, we do not put it into the eye without veterinary guidance. And we do not recommend internal use. And once a stronger or antimicrobial intervention has done its job, we do not keep using it simply out of habit.

Sources used

Estonian Health Board (21.10.2015) – Colloidal silver is not permitted in food supplements or skin disinfectants – https://www.terviseamet.ee/uudised/kolloidhobeda-kasutamine-toidulisandites-voi-naha-desinfitseerimisvahendites-pole-lubatud

NCCIH – Colloidal Silver: What You Need To Know – https://www.nccih.nih.gov/health/colloidal-silver-what-you-need-to-know

FDA – warning letter addressing colloidal silver eye products and animal products – https://www.fda.gov/inspections-compliance-enforcement-and-criminal-investigations/warning-letters/glenn-burkett-naples-corporation-613126-01192022

PubMed (2024) – Effectiveness of silver and iodine dressings on wound healing: systematic review and meta-analysis – https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39142672/

PubMed (2024) – Analysis of therapeutic effect of silver-based dressings on chronic wound healing – https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39087750/

Dogs Naturally – Colloidal Silver For Dogs: Is It Really Safe? – https://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/colloidal-silver-for-dogs/

Judy Morgan – Adored Beast Colloidal SilverSol product instructions (integrative/product-specific practice example) – https://drjudymorgan.com/collections/dog-hot-spot-wound-relief/products/adored-beast-apothecary-colloidal-silversol-mret-activated

Bark & Whiskers – Why Ear Problems Are Nearly Epidemic in Dogs (integrative ear-care example) – https://www.barkandwhiskers.com/2020-05-20-nl-ear-problems-in-dogs/

Colloidal silver is one of those substances for which the internet can offer two completely opposite worlds in a single search.
