I have previously written about its possible uses and suggested mixing it with water to reduce dust. Today I want to separate these claims. A dry powder used against insects in the environment, a mixture applied to a dog’s coat and a substance added to food are not the same use case.

I do not think natural products should automatically be labelled either miracle cures or completely worthless. We need to ask which applications have a plausible mechanism, what studies actually show and where false confidence could harm a dog.

What is diatomaceous earth?

Diatomaceous earth, also called diatomite, consists mainly of silica-containing shells of fossilised diatoms. Its particles are porous and abrasive. In contact with insects, dry diatomaceous earth can damage or remove protective layers on their outer surface, causing them to lose moisture. This is primarily a physical action rather than a poison acting on the insect nervous system.

That mechanism alone does not tell us how well a particular product works against fleas, ticks, household bedbugs or intestinal worms. The species involved, particle size, moisture, contact time and product formulation all affect results. A substance occurring in nature is not automatically safe at every dose and for every purpose.

Controlling insects in the environment: the physical mechanism is real

The US National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC) describes diatomaceous earth acting on fats and moisture-protective layers of insects’ outer covering. An important condition is that the powder stays dry. This is why a suspension applied in a damp environment or to wet fur cannot automatically be assumed to work as effectively as dry powder in contact with insects.

A product registered for the relevant use may have a role as an additional pest-control tool in certain dry, hard-to-reach household locations. But effectiveness depends on much more than the word “natural” on the container. If fleas are already on your dog and breeding in the home, diatomaceous earth alone cannot be relied upon to break their entire life cycle. Eggs, larvae, pupae and adult fleas occupy different places, and a mechanically acting powder does not guarantee the elimination of all stages.

For persistent or severe flea infestations, a suitable treatment for the dog and thorough environmental cleaning are often necessary. FendaF also has a separate article on fleas in dogs.

Applying diatomaceous earth to a dog’s coat

Diatomaceous earth is also used on dogs’ coats as one possible natural pest-control method. Its physical mechanism involves damaging or binding protective lipids on an insect’s outer surface on contact, causing moisture loss and dehydration. This has been described for fleas, among other insects.

Integrative veterinary approaches sometimes use diatomaceous earth as an additional tool against external parasites. For example, holistic veterinarian Dr Andrew Jones discusses applying food-grade powder to the coat, particularly in areas where fleas are commonly found.

I prefer using diatomaceous earth mixed with water for a very specific reason: dry powder generates dust, and inhaling fine particles can irritate the respiratory tract. Adding water reduces airborne dust during application.

Diatomaceous earth does not dissolve in water; it forms a suspension. While wet, it does not dehydrate insects in the same way as dry powder. When the water evaporates and the powder dries, however, its physical action may return. Mixing it with water therefore does not necessarily make it useless.

It is important to distinguish a physical mechanism demonstrated on dry surfaces from the actual effectiveness of a particular water-based suspension on a dog’s coat. Controlled clinical evidence for the latter is limited. We therefore cannot promise that this approach removes every flea or always replaces other parasite control.

Why do I use only food-grade diatomaceous earth, even externally?

I always use food-grade diatomaceous earth, including when applying it to a dog’s coat. The reason is simple: a dog may lick itself and swallow some of the powder on its fur.

Food-grade diatomaceous earth differs from heat-treated diatomite used in swimming-pool filters, which may contain substantially more crystalline silica. Pool-filter material must not be used in animal feed or on a dog’s coat.

Two things must still be distinguished. “Food grade” describes material properties and suitability for certain food uses; it does not automatically mean a particular product has been tested for canine skin application or external parasite control. Check its composition, purity and instructions.

How to reduce the risks of topical use

Mixing the powder with water can reduce dust during application, but does not prevent every possible adverse effect. Diatomaceous earth can dry the skin and irritate eyes. After it dries, residues may become airborne again during vigorous rubbing or brushing.

That is why I avoid contact with a dog’s eyes, nose and mouth. I would also avoid applying it to broken or severely inflamed skin without veterinary advice. The method should take account of the individual dog’s skin condition and the properties of the product used.

If fleas are widespread, remember their life cycle. Adult fleas living on a dog are only part of the problem: eggs, larvae and pupae may be present in the environment. Treating the coat alone may not be enough.

Diatomaceous earth may have a place within a carefully considered external-parasite control plan. There is no reason to deny its possible uses, but it is equally important to know when the chosen approach may be adequate and when other protection is needed.

Intestinal worms: is eating the powder a deworming treatment?

Some integrative and natural-feeding sources suggest adding food-grade diatomaceous earth to dog food, claiming it helps eliminate intestinal parasites. Recommendations sometimes involve giving it for seven or thirty consecutive days. Dogs Naturally Magazine, among others, has published such suggestions. I would not hide this perspective from readers, but I want to make one point very clear: a dry powder’s mechanical action against an insect’s outer surface does not prove that the same powder kills worms inside a dog’s moist digestive tract.

There is insufficient high-quality clinical evidence in dogs to recommend diatomaceous earth as a reliable substitute for an effective dewormer. This is especially important for puppies, in whom some intestinal parasites may cause diarrhoea, anaemia, poor growth and other serious problems. The European Scientific Counsel Companion Animal Parasites (ESCCAP) and conventional veterinary practice recommend assessing parasite risk, performing faecal tests when indicated and choosing treatment appropriate to the parasite.

Suggested daily quantities of food-grade powder sometimes include half a teaspoon for small dogs and puppies, one teaspoon for dogs up to 25 kg, one tablespoon for dogs weighing 25–45 kg and two tablespoons for larger dogs. These are not clinically established doses for treating canine parasites. I therefore would not recommend using them as a deworming course. If parasites are suspected, a dog needs an effective plan, not merely “30 days of powder” marked on the calendar.

Detoxification, heavy metals and “cleaning the gut”

The claim that diatomaceous earth binds toxins, drug or pesticide residues, bacteria and viruses inside the body should be treated as a separate research question. Some laboratory processes use diatomite-based materials to filter water or bind various compounds. But binding a substance in a test tube or wastewater does not prove that powder eaten by a dog safely and effectively removes that substance from its blood or tissues.

Small human studies have also examined topics such as blood lipids, but these cannot demonstrate that giving diatomaceous earth to dogs improves sleep, energy, skin or cholesterol. The presence of silica does not in itself tell us whether, or in what amounts, minerals are absorbed by a dog or whether that particular dog is deficient. A properly balanced diet does not automatically require a “detox powder”.

To me, integrative thinking should also mean asking what we really want to improve. If a dog itches, investigate the cause of itching. If it has parasites, identify and treat them. If toxic exposure is suspected, seek prompt professional assessment rather than a course of powder.

Food grade does not mean unlimited safety

Diatomaceous earth is sold for different purposes. Food-grade material and the heat-treated product used in pool filtration are not interchangeable. Filter products may contain more crystalline silica and must not be mixed into feed. Even for food-grade material, small permitted technological quantities in feed must be distinguished from larger doses given in pursuit of therapeutic effects.

NPIC separately cautions that food-grade powder is not the same as a pesticide product labelled for the intended pest-control use. Scattering loose powder around the home increases exposure, and inhaled dust may irritate the nose and respiratory tract. I would particularly avoid spreading dust where dogs, young children or family members with respiratory disease sleep.

What about odours and garden pests?

Diatomite can absorb moisture and some odours, which is why similar mineral materials are used in various industrial and household products. That does not mean the best solution is to cover a dog’s bed or coat in powder. If a bed smells, my first steps are to wash it, keep it dry and identify the cause rather than add a thick layer of powder.

In gardens, diatomite-based products applied to dry surfaces may harm some insects, including beneficial species. I would therefore not call it indiscriminately “environmentally friendly” pest control. Rain, watering and wind affect its action, and products should be used only as directed on the label while preventing dust exposure to people and animals.

Diatomaceous earth: FendaF’s practical decision guide

Identify your goal: treating a dog’s coat, controlling pests in the environment and dealing with intestinal parasites require different approaches.

For application to a dog’s coat, choose a suitable food-grade product; mixing with water helps reduce dust during application.

Keep the mixture away from the eyes, nose and mouth; as it dries, residues can become dusty again and may dry out the skin.

With fleas, consider the environment and the whole flea life cycle; treating fur alone may not be enough.

Do not treat traditional oral quantities as proven deworming doses; seek immediate veterinary help for breathing difficulties.

I do not change my position merely because a product is natural or generates strong opinions. Diatomaceous earth has a genuine physical insect-control mechanism. The question is how to use it appropriately and whether a better, more suitable option exists for the particular dog and goal. That is a much more useful question than “natural or chemical?”.

Sources

National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC).
