If the packet showed a lovely picture of meat and meat came first on the list, everything seemed fine. Only when comparing treats sold in Estonia did I notice how often glycerin and sorbitol appeared in soft products. My first question was why a dog should eat these substances at all. I still ask it, but now add two more: why does the manufacturer use them, and what do we actually know about their safety?

I would not want choosing a good treat to become a game of fearing chemical names. Ordinary food ingredients have chemical names too. That does not make every additive necessary or excuse a manufacturer from answering questions. Reading a label starts with understanding, not a blacklist.

Why are they used in soft treats?

Glycerin, also called glycerol, binds water and helps keep a product soft. It is used as a humectant in foods and other products. A soft treat is not simply dried meat: texture, shelf life, moisture and microbiological safety all need a considered solution. Glycerol can be part of that solution. It can be made from vegetable oils, for example, but whether the starting material was coconut oil, another vegetable oil or another suitable source does not change the molecule’s chemical identity.

Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol, or polyol, also known on food labels as E420. It occurs naturally in some fruits and is generally manufactured from carbohydrates. It tastes sweet but can also help regulate moisture and texture. An ingredient list alone therefore does not always reveal whether it was added for taste, softness or several technological purposes.

One distinction matters to me: a technological function is not a nutritional benefit. A substance may help make a stable treat without being something a dog separately needs for health. That alone does not make it dangerous either.

Glycerin: what do we know about safety?

Glycerol is not a foreign molecule to a dog’s body. It forms part of fats and normal metabolism. The European Food Safety Authority has assessed it as a food additive, but an important distinction remains: assessments of human food supplements and food additives cannot automatically establish that every dog treat is suitable, whatever its glycerol content.

In larger amounts, glycerol’s osmotic properties can affect digestion, and some animals may develop softer stools or diarrhoea. This matters particularly for sensitive digestion, but the effect depends on quantity and the whole recipe. A dog occasionally eating one soft treat without digestive trouble is a very different situation from eating a whole large packet at once.

“Plant-derived” does not automatically guarantee purity either. Industrial glycerol needs appropriate quality standards and control of impurities. This does not justify assuming harmful manufacturing residues are present in a particular treat. It does justify asking about raw-material origin and compliance. I would ask the same questions if glycerol were presented under a particularly beautiful marketing name.

Sorbitol is not xylitol

Similar names can cause genuinely dangerous confusion here. Sorbitol and xylitol are both sugar alcohols, but their effects on dogs differ. Xylitol can trigger a rapid, severe fall in blood glucose and cause liver injury. Suspected ingestion requires immediate veterinary help, not waiting at home for symptoms.

Sorbitol is not associated with the same specific insulin response characteristic of xylitol in dogs. That does not make unlimited amounts appropriate. Sorbitol can be incompletely absorbed; larger amounts remain in the intestine, draw in water and cause gas, discomfort or diarrhoea. Quantity deserves particular attention in a dog with sensitive digestion.

Sorbitol has previously been blamed for a long list of problems, from hypoglycaemia to arthritis, allergies and dental issues. Existing evidence does not support that sweeping conclusion about sorbitol used in dog treats. Some claims probably confuse different sweeteners; others present possible risks as established consequences. My underlying question remains: should sorbitol be in my dog’s treats?

How much is actually in a treat?

Ingredient order can suggest which raw materials were used in greater amounts, but cannot tell you how many grams of glycerol or sorbitol a dog receives from one treat. Drying and other manufacturing steps can alter the final moisture content and relative proportions. It would therefore be misleading to claim that every soft treat automatically contains, say, 20–30% glycerin after processing. Such a figure can describe only a particular recipe and process, not a whole category.

Human food-additive names and feed labelling also need distinguishing: depending on its use, the same substance may appear under different legal categories. If I question a treat, I would ask the manufacturer what function the additive serves, its concentration in the finished product and whether the raw material is controlled and suitable for dogs. Equally important is the whole treat: actual animal ingredients, energy content and how many treats the dog receives alongside their main food.

The more labels I read, the clearer it becomes that one word does not describe a recipe. Meat percentage, processing, additives, shelf life and the dog’s tolerance form a whole. A well-composed treat does not become worthless because of one functional additive, and a questionable recipe does not become good because the packet says “natural”.

Would I buy these treats?

Given two similar treats, if one achieves suitable texture and shelf life with a simpler composition, I always prefer that one. I particularly like single-ingredient treats such as dried beef tripe. When a treat contains twelve ingredients and the dog reacts, identifying the cause is difficult. With one ingredient, there are fewer possible explanations and tolerance is easier to observe. This is my deliberate purchasing choice, not a claim that glycerin or sorbitol is poisonous at every dose. Soft treats can be convenient for training or dogs uncomfortable with hard chewing. In other dogs, soft treats containing humectants may soften stools.

My rule of thumb remains simple: treats should not crowd out the dog’s proper food. A usual starting point is to keep all treats within roughly ten per cent of daily energy unless the veterinarian recommends otherwise for a specific reason. If a new treat causes diarrhoea, I first stop offering it, review the whole composition and quantity and watch whether the problem settles.

I do not want people to fear every ingredient. I want them to ask: why is it here, is the amount justified, and does it suit this dog? Those questions apply equally to premium packaging, a plain paper wrapper and a handmade treat.

FendaF’s practical suggestion. Pick your dog’s most frequent treat and check what it is based on, why any technological ingredients might be needed, whether they are essential and how much energy the actual daily portion supplies. If a soft treat causes digestive changes, reduce the amount or try a different recipe. If the label lists xylitol, do not give it to your dog; seek veterinary help immediately after accidental ingestion.

If you choose fruit or vegetables as treats instead, consider when chopping or pureeing may help.

Sources

EFSA ANS Panel (2017).
