For years, I have preferred calendula tincture or ointment for small skin troubles and have seen some superficial irritation settle with it. That is my experience, not a controlled comparative trial. But the wider question remains: why automatically reach for something that kills microbes on a small fresh wound when we also want to protect the cells needed for healing?

Integrative veterinarian Peter Dobias has written extensively about this. His approach centres on a clean wound, gentle rinsing and keeping the wound edges soft and flexible. His observations about thick scabs are especially interesting: the aim is not to “dry out” a wound as quickly as possible at any cost. That does not mean antiseptics used in a veterinary clinic are wrong. A small home abrasion and a contaminated or deep wound treated in a clinic are different situations.

A wound first needs cleaning, not necessarily disinfection

With a fresh superficial abrasion, the main task is removing sand, soil, hair and other visible debris. Clean, running lukewarm water or sterile saline from a pharmacy often does the most important work. Rinsing physically removes dirt without adding a strong chemical to the wound surface. There is no need to brush or painfully scrub it.

The Merck Veterinary Manual emphasises adequate fluid volume for wound irrigation. Adding antimicrobial agents to irrigation fluid is controversial; stronger chlorhexidine solutions harm healing tissues, and hydrogen peroxide is not recommended for irrigation. The manual also describes situations in which a veterinarian can use an appropriately diluted antiseptic. For small superficial wounds at home, there is no need to buy or dilute an antiseptic yourself: clean water or saline is the first and usually sufficient cleanser. Treatment of deeper or more complex wounds belongs with the veterinarian.

Why might an antiseptic interfere with healing?

A wound does not heal simply because it contains as few bacteria as possible. Healing requires fibroblasts, skin cells, blood vessels and the immune system to work together. In a 2022 cell-culture study by Rueda-Fernández and colleagues, several common antiseptics reduced the viability of human skin fibroblasts and, in some experiments, their movement into a damaged area. This offers a plausible biological explanation for avoiding strong or repeated chemical treatment when unnecessary.

The study cannot establish conclusions for every antiseptic, concentration or wound type. Cell culture is not a real wound. The benefit of fighting infection must always be weighed against tissue injury. Preparing skin for surgery, cleaning intact skin and repeatedly irrigating an open wound are different activities. Home care for a superficial wound also differs from treating a deep wound in a clinic.

Dobias recommends avoiding hydrogen peroxide, iodine solutions and chlorhexidine soap in home wound care because, in his assessment, they damage cells at the wound edges. His conclusion is stricter than conventional veterinary guidance, but the message that unnecessary antiseptic may add nothing to healing fits the principle of protecting tissue.

Does a scab protect a wound or hinder healing?

This is where Dobias’s approach differs from many people’s habits. We are often taught simply to leave a scab alone. Drawing on clinical experience, initially with horses and later dogs, he describes thick dried crusts and discharge cracking, irritating surrounding skin and hindering smooth approximation of the wound edges. Discharge can also remain trapped underneath, unseen from above.

Early in healing, Dobias recommends gentle rinsing and softening thick crusts with warm water or saline. His method uses clean damp gauze, enough time for softening and removal only of material that comes away without tearing or force. Initially he does this once or twice daily if needed, later allowing a thin scab to form. His different guides describe periods from a few days to about a week. This is a practitioner’s useful recommendation, not a universal scientific deadline.

For me, an important boundary is this: thick scabs and dried discharge can be softened patiently with warm water or damp gauze as Dobias describes, but I remove only what comes away gently. Do not pry off firmly attached scabs at home. Stop if this causes pain, bleeding or exposes raw tissue. Nor should this general advice be applied independently to a sutured surgical wound, deep bite, extensive burn or bleeding injury. Follow the treating veterinarian’s specific instructions for a surgical wound.

Modern wound care also aims for an appropriately moist healing environment rather than unnecessary drying and cracking. That does not mean soaking wet, airless or macerated beneath a dressing. The balance of moisture, discharge and any dressing depends on the wound.

What would I do with a small superficial wound at home?

First, decide whether home care is suitable at all. For a small abrasion or superficial scratch in a dog who otherwise feels well, I rinse visible dirt away with lukewarm running water or saline. I may use clean damp gauze, without scrubbing. I prevent constant licking. Sometimes a protective collar contributes more to healing than another bottle of liquid.

Over the following days, I check whether the wound settles, edges come closer and discharge decreases. If a thick dried crust develops, I can carefully soften it with lukewarm water and damp gauze, removing only freely separating crust or discharge. I do not force off an attached scab. Whether a dressing is useful depends on location and wound: an appropriate non-stick dressing may protect from dirt and friction, while a badly applied one can cause problems.

I would not automatically use hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, strong iodine or chlorhexidine soap for daily treatment. Nor do I pour essential oils into an open wound. Killing microbes does not necessarily make a product supportive of healing.

What about calendula and gentler options?

Calendula officinalis is familiar to me. I have used calendula ointment for superficial irritation and previously also tincture, for example to dry a hot spot. Today I distinguish those experiences more critically: rapid drying does not automatically mean better healing, and an alcohol tincture can sting and irritate an open wound. I certainly would not apply undiluted alcohol tincture to an open, heavily bleeding or deep wound. Calendula suits my dogs very well, but that does not mean it suits every dog.

Laboratory findings and limited clinical results justify further research into calendula’s potential anti-inflammatory and wound-healing support. But there are not enough good comparative studies of real canine wounds to call calendula ointment proven superior to every other approach. Plant products also vary in formulation and may irritate or cause allergy.

Dobias uses a plant-based SkinSpray product in practice. His clinical experience is interesting and worth hearing, but a manufacturer’s own material cannot alone establish product superiority. The strongest general home-care advice is not a particular brand: it is cleanliness, tissue protection, appropriate moisture and close observation.

When is veterinary help needed?

Seek prompt veterinary help for a deep or heavily contaminated wound, bleeding despite pressure, an injury near the eye, a bite or puncture, a wound needing stitches or a dog in obvious pain. Swelling, heat, pus, bad smell, spreading redness, fever, lethargy or stalled healing also need assessment. A small opening may conceal extensive deeper tissue injury.

Clinical cleaning, removal of dead tissue, drainage, suturing, pain relief and antimicrobial treatment when needed address problems that rinsing with water at home cannot replace. The point is not to argue with the veterinarian about antiseptics. At home, however, we need not import every clinical treatment into a situation where it may offer no benefit.

FendaF’s practical suggestion

For a small superficial wound, start by gently removing visible dirt with lukewarm water or saline. Keep it clean, prevent licking and monitor healing. Dried thick discharge can be softened with damp gauze, but never force off an attached scab. Routine antiseptic is not a substitute for good rinsing in home first aid. Deep, bitten, purulent, heavily bleeding or worsening wounds need veterinary assessment.

To me, wound care starts with removing what obstructs healing and trying not to add anything that unnecessarily harms repairing tissue. Sometimes the best care is surprisingly modest and simple.

If superficial injuries follow repeated scratching, investigate possible causes of itching and flaky skin rather than treating each new wound alone.

Sources

Peter Dobias, DVM. 7 steps to trouble-free natural wound care for dogs and people.

Peter Dobias, DVM.
