My first reaction was spontaneous: is that really a good idea? At the time, I had not yet studied canine coat thermoregulation in depth, but I wanted to understand why clipping double-coated breeds is generally discouraged. The more I read, the clearer it became that the answer cannot be reduced to “fur keeps dogs cool”.

German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Labradors, Shelties, Border Collies, Australian Shepherds and many other breeds have double coats. A thick summer coat does not automatically mean that shaving it off is the solution. Equally, it would be wrong to promise that a double-coated dog could never overheat because of its coat. Heat, humidity, activity and the dog’s health all play major roles.

What are the outer coat and undercoat for?

The outer coat usually consists of tougher guard hairs that help repel water, dirt and some of the sun’s radiation. Beneath it is a softer, denser undercoat. In winter, the double coat helps reduce heat loss; in spring and summer, a substantial part of the undercoat is shed. Some dogs leave handfuls on the sofa. With others, you only notice the shedding when you pick up a brush.

A coat provides insulation: it affects heat transfer both from the environment into the body and from the body outwards. This is where the nuance matters. Saying that fur always keeps a dog cool in summer would be an oversimplification. A very dense, matted coat, or one that traps moisture, can hinder heat loss and conceal skin problems. Conversely, clipping it very short may reduce protection from direct sunlight and mechanical irritation. The thermal effect depends on the circumstances, not simply on coat length.

Dogs do not cool themselves in the same way humans do. Their primary cooling mechanism is panting and the evaporation of moisture from the respiratory tract. Removing fur does not replace a cool environment, rest or access to drinking water.

What might happen if you shave a double-coated dog?

The first concern is the skin. Without the protection of guard hairs, skin is more exposed to the sun and the risk of sunburn may increase, particularly in lightly pigmented dogs. The second question is regrowth. Undercoat and guard hairs do not always grow at the same pace. After clipping, the coat may temporarily have an uneven texture, feel softer or mat more easily.

Some dogs experience slow regrowth or post-clipping hair loss. However, this cannot be predicted for every dog, and not every change in the coat can be attributed to clipping alone. If the coat does not recover, a veterinarian should also consider other causes, including hormonal and skin disorders. Post-clipping alopecia is not a diagnosis to make at home.

For that reason, I would not recommend shaving a double coat simply as a precaution. But “never” is not the right word either. Preparation for surgery, a necessary veterinary examination, wound treatment or extensive painful matting may fully justify clipping. In those cases, the decision should be based on the individual dog’s welfare, not an internet rule.

Should you brush out the undercoat in summer?

Yes, loose undercoat should be removed regularly. But removing it does not mean pulling hair out close to the skin or forcibly thinning the coat. An appropriate brush or undercoat rake helps remove loose hair and allows air to move through the coat. How often you brush depends on the coat type, shedding cycle and skin condition. For some dogs, a few thorough sessions a week are enough; others need daily attention during peak shedding.

I always check the skin while brushing. Moisture, redness or the start of inflammation can hide beneath mats. The armpits, groin, behind the ears and chest deserve particular attention. For a large, thick-coated dog like Faddu, brushing is not merely a cosmetic exercise. It is also a chance to notice skin problems early.

If a coat is already so badly matted that brushing it out causes pain, do not cling rigidly to the principle that double-coated dogs must never be clipped. Find a skilled groomer or veterinarian who can decide how to restore the coat and skin with the least harm.

How can you actually help a dog in hot weather?

The most effective measures do not involve clippers. Walk early in the morning or in the evening, choose shady paths, avoid hot asphalt and watch whether your dog wants to slow down. Bring water and let the dog drink. Offer rest in a cool room. Air conditioning, a fan and a cool floor may help more than an entirely new haircut.

If your dog likes getting wet in a shallow pool or by the water, that can be helpful. The water must be safe, and the dog should be supervised. Getting wet is not permission to play in intense heat for hours. Overheating also depends on humidity and exertion. A cooling mat or vest may be suitable, but it must not restrict airflow or the dog’s ability to move somewhere cooler. Gel-filled mats are not a good option for dogs that chew them.

Uncontrolled heavy panting, weakness, poor coordination, vomiting or collapse are urgent warning signs. Move the dog to a cooler place, start cooling with cool, not ice-cold, water and contact an emergency veterinarian immediately. Do not wait for the dog to settle down on its own.

What if a dog clearly seems uncomfortable because of its thick coat?

Some dogs with exceptionally dense coats, older animals or dogs recovering from illness may need an individual grooming plan. If heat tolerance has suddenly worsened, assess body condition, breathing, heart, joints and possible medication effects, not just the coat. An overweight or short-nosed dog does not suddenly become safe in the heat merely because it has been clipped.

If a groomer offers to “thin” the coat with clippers, ask how short they intend to cut it and why. Removing mats and tidying the coat may be reasonable goals, but shaving it off should not automatically be part of summer grooming.

In summary

Do not automatically clip a double-coated dog short out of fear of heat. The double coat serves several purposes, but it is not a magical cooling system. Regular brushing, a clean and mat-free coat, a cool environment and sensible activity management are usually a better starting point. When clipping is necessary because of skin problems, illness or extensive matting, the decision should reflect that particular dog’s needs.

FendaF’s practical recommendation
If your dog seems hot in summer, check four things first: has the loose undercoat been brushed out, does the dog have shade and drinking water, is the walking intensity appropriate for the weather, and is the skin beneath the coat healthy? Only then discuss with a groomer whether the coat length needs changing at all.

Sources

American Kennel Club: Is It OK to Shave Your Dog?

ASPCA: Should You Shave Your Pet in Hot Weather?

RSPCA: Keeping dogs safe in hot weather

Dogs Naturally: Why You Shouldn’t Shave Your Dog in Summer (original perspective)

A few years ago, I heard about a German Shepherd whose coat had been clipped extremely short for summer.
