That function does not change because the tag rattles. But does it need to rattle? For me, this became a serious question after two rather frightening incidents.

Both Fenton and Peku had accidents in which a metal tag became trapped between terrace boards and prevented them from lifting their heads freely. That was a specific mechanical hazard, not just a theoretical concern about noise. And because our German Shepherds have also worn chain collars, simply writing a phone number on a collar does not solve every situation.

We looked for another option and, through an acquaintance, found rubber-like SiliDog tags. They do not rattle in the same way and have remained in good condition after years of use. That is a positive personal experience, not a durability test across all dogs, surfaces and seasons. Softer material can reduce certain snagging risks, but no hanging tag is completely snag-proof.

Why might metal rattling bother a dog?

Dogs can hear higher-frequency sounds than humans and detect certain sounds at lower volumes. This does not mean every noise hurts them or that all rattling metal tags cause hearing damage. Discomfort and risk depend on loudness, frequency, duration, distance and the individual dog’s sensitivity.

Animal behaviour researcher Marc Bekoff has suggested that a constantly jingling tag could create an unnecessary auditory burden. His point makes sense to me: a dog cannot decide, “Today I am taking this noise off.” The sound may accompany walking, running, sniffing and resting. However, Bekoff’s discussion is principally an animal-welfare argument and observation, not an experiment proving hearing loss from metal tags.

I have a personal comparison. When I run, I listen to music through headphones. I usually remove my earrings first, but sometimes forget. When the earrings repeatedly knock against the headphones, the sound has bothered me enough that I have stopped mid-run to take them off. A dog cannot do that, which is why I take the question seriously.

Can a dog tag damage a dog’s hearing?

Current evidence does not allow us to state that with confidence. Loud noise, such as a nearby gunshot or explosion, can damage canine hearing, but that does not show that an ordinary metal tag reaches comparable levels. It would also be misleading to borrow the 85 dB threshold from human workplace safety and declare it safe or dangerous for a dog tag without measuring the actual sound.

My practical question is whether the dog reacts to the rattling: does it startle, withdraw, scratch its neck, shake its head or become wary when it sees the equipment? Do those reactions disappear when the rattling stops or becomes quieter? This is not a diagnosis, but it helps decide whether quieter equipment might suit the dog.

Noise exposure comes from more than tags

Bekoff also mentions loud music, tools and outdoor concerts. I like that perspective because it considers the dog’s entire acoustic environment. A dog may not enjoy its person listening to AC/DC at a volume that is uncomfortable even to human ears. With vacuum cleaners, building work or fireworks, it makes sense to let the animal leave and rest somewhere quiet.

Noise is not the only source of stress. Predictability and the opportunity to get away matter too. If I see severe panic, recurrent ear pain or persistent head shaking, I would not assume a new tag is the answer. The ears and other possible medical causes also need assessment.

But doesn’t a metal chain collar rattle too?

I have considered this. On our dogs, the chain sat around the neck within the coat and was almost inaudible during running. Sometimes I heard Faddu only when he settled down to sleep and the chain touched the floor. A hanging metal tag, by contrast, produced a sharper and more repetitive jingle with movement. But chains and other neck equipment can also create pressure and other risks. The absence of one problem does not make every part of the equipment ideal.

What quieter alternatives are available?

One option is a tag made from a soft material. Another is a flat tag attached securely against the collar instead of dangling. Contact details can also be engraved directly onto suitable equipment if they remain durable and legible. A soft sleeve or preventing two metal tags from striking each other may also reduce noise.

For any option, I would check three things: is the phone number readable, could the item catch on something, and will the attachment remain secure during normal movement? A breakaway fitting may reduce one snagging risk, but also means the dog could lose its identification. There is no universal fastening that works for every dog. Microchipping and up-to-date registry information provide essential backup, yet a visible phone number may still be the quickest route home when someone finds a dog on the street.

When does neck equipment itself become a risk?

When dogs play together, climb fences or move through undergrowth, consider the snagging risks of the whole collar and tag. A pendant can wedge between boards, a ring can catch on a grille and a collar can catch in another dog’s teeth. Equipment must suit the activity. In some situations, choose safer equipment or remove it only in a controlled setting with minimal risk of escape.

If a dog already has neck pain, coughing, breathing difficulties or discomfort associated with its collar, assess both the equipment and the dog’s health. And remember: the tag’s primary purpose is still to help the dog get home.

Practical ID tag check

Listen to how much the tag jingles during normal movement. Check whether it can catch in fencing or terrace gaps, and inspect the attachment rings for wear. Ensure the phone number is legible and current, and the microchip registration is up to date. If your dog starts avoiding the equipment or suffers a neck injury, assess collar fit and seek professional advice rather than merely changing the tag.

In summary

For me, the best tag helps a lost dog return home without disrupting its daily life. We do not need to ban metal or glorify silent tags. We simply need to look at the individual dog, its surroundings and its experience of noise, and ask whether the same purpose could be achieved with a little less sound and risk.

Sources

Marc Bekoff (2019).
