I actually love glass bowls too, but I’m not convinced they would be a great idea with Faddu and Ossu. When two big dogs decide to move through the kitchen at once, a bowl can easily go flying. Faddu can even step right into one because watching what’s happening elsewhere is obviously more important. Broken glass on the floor would be a much worse surprise than one boring but intact steel bowl.

Reading Julia Henriques’ overview of bowl materials made me reconsider a question we often treat too simply: what actually makes a food bowl safe? Is it enough for it to be metal, ceramic or “natural”? Or should we examine the precise material, surface coating, food-contact suitability, temperature limits and how well the bowl can be cleaned?

For me there is no universal answer. A bowl that suits a small, calm dog might be one I would never use for Faddu and Ossu. Real life matters as much as material.

Stainless steel: practical, but not magical

Stainless steel’s main advantage is durability. High-quality, smooth steel is easy to wash, does not shatter when dropped and is often dishwasher-safe. But not all metal bowls are identical. The exact alloy, manufacturing quality control, seams, coatings and condition of the surface can vary.

In 2012, it was discovered in the United States that some batches of Petco stainless-steel bowls contained metal with radioactive cobalt-60. The incident was real, but according to the contemporary announcement, the measured radiation levels were low and did not indicate a health risk from the products found. This is not evidence that stainless-steel bowls in general are radioactive. It does, however, illustrate the value of a traceable supply chain and good materials control.

If a bowl begins to rust, its coating peels or deep damage develops, I would replace it. Nor would I automatically assume that every shiny silver bowl is stainless steel. Some inexpensive bowls may be made from a different coated metal.

Ceramic: stable when the glaze is appropriate

A heavy ceramic bowl can be useful for a dog that pushes its dish around the floor. Safety depends on the glaze and whether the bowl is intended for food contact. Inadequate glazing or poor manufacturing can allow substances such as lead or cadmium to migrate into food. Colour or country of origin alone cannot prove or rule out that risk.

Check ceramic bowls for cracks, chips and damage to the glaze. Cracked glaze can be harder to clean, and a damaged bowl is no longer the same product whose safety was originally assumed. Intact, food-safe ceramic that cleans easily can be an excellent choice.

Glass: my favourite in theory, not always in the kitchen

Glass offers a relatively inert, non-porous surface. Food-safe glass is generally easy to clean and requires no colourful coatings. Its main risk, however, is mechanical: if it breaks, shards can injure a dog’s paws or mouth.

A stable glass bowl may suit a small, calm dog. I would be more cautious with large dogs, enthusiastic eaters or slippery floors. For my boys I have still decided against it. That is a practical assessment of risk in our home, not a claim that glass is chemically unsafe.

Bamboo: what kind of bamboo?

Here the word “natural” can create a misleading impression of safety. Solid bamboo wood and plastic composites containing bamboo fibres are not the same material. The European Commission has warned that melamine-plastic tableware containing bamboo powder has been marketed as natural bamboo, even though such additives are not permitted in EU food-contact plastics. Some products have shown migration of melamine and formaldehyde, particularly with use and wear.

So I would not say “bamboo bowls are completely safe and never release anything”. First find out what the product is actually made of. For a composite, check the manufacturer’s specific materials declaration and compliance with food-contact requirements. A “natural” label is not a certificate.

Plastic: risk depends on the material and its use

Plastic is a broad family of materials. Some plastics are designed and tested for food contact; others are not. Risk depends on the polymer, additives, temperature, wear and duration of use. It is incorrect to assume that every plastic bowl automatically contains BPA or phthalates.

Does that mean I should buy plastic bowls for my dogs? Not necessarily. I still prefer materials whose cleanliness and condition are easy to assess. If a plastic bowl becomes scratched, cloudy or cracked, I would stop using it. And if irritation appears around the dog’s nose or mouth, consider not only the bowl but also cleaning products and skin diseases rather than treating one possible cause as a diagnosis.

Melamine: cold food is not the same as hot food

Melamine-formaldehyde resin tableware can be hard and durable. Problems arise primarily with high temperatures, inappropriate use or wear, when the migration of certain substances can increase. In 2026 the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) clarified that conventional melamine-resin tableware is not expected to harm health when used with cold or lukewarm food, but recommends avoiding it for hot food and microwave heating.

This distinction matters. Both “melamine is always poisonous” and “melamine is always safe” are overly broad. I would not put hot food in a melamine bowl or warm a dog’s meal in one. I would also replace a bowl with a damaged surface.

Silicone: useful for travel, but not for everyone

A collapsible silicone bowl is very practical for hiking or car trips. Good-quality, food-safe silicone can be suitable, and its light weight is an advantage when travelling. For daily use at home it may be too flexible, especially for a large or enthusiastic eater.

With a dog that likes chewing, the risk is that pieces may be torn off. In that case I would choose a product able to withstand the dog’s habits and pay attention to thorough cleaning and drying.

Aluminium: untreated and anodised are not the same

Aluminium bowls can be light and durable, but surface treatment is important. Anodising makes the surface more resistant and may reduce the metal’s contact with food. Untreated or damaged aluminium is a different situation. Still, there is no basis for claiming that every aluminium bowl automatically causes neurological disease or bone damage in dogs.

If a manufacturer cannot provide clear information about materials and food-contact suitability, I would rather not buy the bowl. Simpler, more transparent alternatives are available, and I have no reason to take an unnecessary risk.

Heavy metals and labels: what can owners actually check?

Lead, cadmium and other contaminants may be a problem in certain low-quality products. But you cannot establish contamination by looking at a bowl or assuming it solely from its country of origin. EU food-contact material rules require that substances do not migrate into food at levels that endanger health. Labelling of items sold specifically for pets may be inconsistent, so it makes sense to prefer manufacturers who can provide precise information.

I would check whether the bowl is suitable for food contact, what the cleaning and temperature restrictions are and whether the material is clearly specified. A “for pets only” label does not by itself prove toxicity, but neither does it provide extra assurance of compliance with food-contact standards. When in doubt, choose a product with clearer documentation.

One thing that may matter more than the material: washing

Simply choosing steel, glass or ceramic does not keep bacteria off an otherwise intact bowl. A 2023 Italian study examined microbial contamination in the feeding bowls of 96 dogs. On average, the metal bowls actually carried more aerobic bacteria than the plastic bowls, and bowls used for wet food were more contaminated than those used for dry food. That does not mean metal is inherently “dirtier”. Sample size, handling habits, washing frequency and cleaning methods limit how far these findings can be generalised.

The practical lesson is that buying the “right” material cannot replace hygiene. Wash food bowls after every meal, clean water bowls regularly and keep drinking water fresh. Removing leftovers is particularly important with wet and raw diets.

A trial published in 2022 similarly showed that following suitable hygiene procedures can reduce bacterial contamination of bowls.

I like using the dishwasher because it makes cleaning easier and more consistent. But handwashing can also work when appropriate detergent and water are used and the bowl is allowed to dry. A quick rinse may not remove grease and biofilm.

FendaF’s rule for choosing a safer food bowl

Choose an intact, smooth, stable bowl made from a clearly identified material suitable for food contact.

Consider your dog’s size and behaviour. With large, energetic dogs, avoid bowls that easily break or tip over.

Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning and temperature instructions. Do not put hot food in melamine or heat it in a microwave.

Wash the food bowl after each meal and clean the water bowl regularly. Do not rely solely on a material’s supposedly “antibacterial” reputation.

Replace bowls when the surface cracks, rusts, peels or becomes difficult to clean.

If my old steel bowls are still in good condition and can be cleaned properly, I do not need to throw them away just because of their age. But I can now evaluate them more thoughtfully. To me, that is what good safety advice should do: help us choose a suitable, traceable and genuinely cleanable bowl for the individual dog, rather than fear every material.

References

European Commission.
