Yet it is an essential vitamin. We sometimes hear that biotin can help restore a dog's coat, reduce itching or improve skin condition. But does every dog with a dull coat need extra biotin, or is it a little more complicated?

When a dog develops a skin problem, it's tempting to reach straight for a 'skin and coat' supplement. I would first ask why the problem appeared. Biotin may be part of the solution, but it is neither a diagnosis nor a universal skin treatment.

What does biotin do in a dog's body?

Biotin is a water-soluble B vitamin involved in the metabolism of fats, glucose and certain amino acids. Several enzymes depend on it. Biotin is therefore necessary for normal growth and tissue function, and deficiency can show up as changes in the skin, coat and general wellbeing.

Dogs obtain biotin from their diet, and intestinal microbes may produce some too. But here's an important 'why?' question: just because a bacterium produces a vitamin doesn't prove that the dog can absorb enough of it. The actual supply depends on the diet, digestion, microbes and the individual circumstances.

Can biotin help with skin problems?

An older but still frequently cited study offers an interesting answer. In 1989, Frigg, Schulze and Völker described 119 dogs with skin or coat symptoms given approximately 5 mg of biotin per 10 kg of body weight daily for 3–5 weeks. The report stated that symptoms disappeared in 60% of the dogs and improved in a further 31%. Dogs whose condition required treatments such as glucocorticoids were excluded.

Those findings shouldn't be dismissed. However, by today's standards this was not a robust placebo-controlled trial. It had no comparison group, so we cannot reliably separate biotin's effect from the natural course of the condition, other concurrent changes or the way improvement was assessed. Nor did the study prove that biotin helps 91% of all itchy dogs. It used one particular dose and a short follow-up period. That does not automatically make the same amount an appropriate long-term daily supplement for every dog.

Take a closer look at the product's biotin content

For me, the practical value of this study is that biotin may indeed be a useful supportive option for some dogs. But before choosing a supplement, we should ask what is actually wrong with the individual dog and whether biotin deficiency is even a plausible explanation.

FendaF also stocks WINNER PLUS Biotin Forte tablets. According to the manufacturer, the product contains 4,000,000 µg of biotin per kilogram, equivalent to 4 mg per gram. A 200 g pack contains approximately 58 tablets, which means an estimated 13.8 mg of biotin per tablet. The manufacturer recommends two tablets a day for a 10 kg dog, giving approximately 27.6 mg of biotin.

For comparison, dogs weighing 10 kg received around 5 mg of biotin daily in the 1989 study. The manufacturer's recommended Biotin Forte amount is therefore about 5.5 times higher in this example. That difference is not, in itself, a warning sign: biotin has very low known toxicity.

In our experience, Biotin Forte has worked well, and the higher amount of biotin is one possible explanation. For now, though, that is a hypothesis rather than a proven dose-response relationship: the earlier study neither compared different doses nor tested Biotin Forte. It lasted only 3–5 weeks. For coat problems, the Biotin Forte manufacturer recommends the full dose for eight weeks, followed by half the dose.

I've used Biotin Forte tablets with Ossu myself and saw a clear improvement in his skin and coat, with no side effects. On the strength of my own experience, I feel confident recommending this product.

What can cause biotin deficiency?

Naturally occurring biotin deficiency is relatively uncommon in dogs and cats eating an appropriate complete diet. The risk may increase with a severely unbalanced diet, certain digestive or metabolic problems, or prolonged circumstances that disrupt gut microbes or nutrient availability. The Merck Veterinary Manual also mentions oral antibiotics as one potential factor because they can affect vitamin-producing microbes. That doesn't mean every course of antibiotics causes biotin deficiency.

Another well-known example is raw egg white. It contains avidin, a protein that binds biotin and can interfere with its absorption. Whether this matters clinically depends on the entire diet and how long exposure continues; an occasional egg doesn't automatically lead to a deficiency. Some older texts suggest a fixed threshold of 'eight raw eggs a day', but this cannot be treated as a universally proven limit for dogs of every size. Cooking reduces avidin activity, while egg yolk itself contains biotin. So look at the whole egg and the whole diet rather than drawing conclusions from one ingredient.

Which symptoms might suggest a problem?

Signs described with biotin deficiency include scaly or inflamed skin, a dull or brittle coat, hair loss, slowed growth and lethargy. None of these symptoms is unique to biotin deficiency. Allergies, parasites, yeast, bacterial infections, hormonal disorders and numerous other causes can look similar.

If a dog is intensely itchy, develops oozing patches, loses more and more hair or is generally unwell, simply waiting for biotin to work is not a sensible approach. The underlying cause needs to be investigated. Biotin measurement is not a routine component of a standard urinalysis or complete blood count either, so a random lab value should not be used to self-diagnose a deficiency.

Where does a dog get biotin from?

Biotin is present in several foods, including liver and other organ meats, egg yolks, meat and certain fish. Some plant foods also contain it, but the amount, processing and portion size vary. Seed oil is not automatically a good source of biotin simply because it is plant-based: refined oil is mostly fat rather than B vitamins.

If you feed a complete diet, examine the overall formula and the manufacturer's nutrient data instead of trying to balance a random diet by adding biotin-rich supplements. If you prepare your dog's food at home, it is even more important to assess the whole ration. A single 'healthy' ingredient cannot replace proper nutrient balance.

How safe is a higher dose of biotin?

Biotin is a water-soluble B vitamin with low known toxicity. In 2025, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) confirmed that biotin is safe as an animal feed additive under its authorised conditions of use; no general maximum content has been established for biotin as a feed additive. That's reassuring, but it does not mean that every high dose and every duration of use has been separately studied in dogs. One practical detail concerns laboratory testing: larger amounts of biotin may interfere with certain tests using biotin–streptavidin technology. This has been demonstrated mainly in humans; the potential effect in dogs depends on the specific test method. So simply tell your veterinarian before blood tests if your dog receives a biotin supplement.

To me, the more interesting question is whether a higher dose of biotin might offer additional benefits for certain skin or coat problems. It is possible, but high-quality canine studies comparing different doses are scarce. If you use a supplement, you can track whether the skin and coat actually improve. We needn't dismiss a good real-life experience, but we shouldn't present it as proof of the same result in every dog.

FendaF’s practical biotin checklist

Check whether your dog eats a complete diet suitable for its life stage, or whether the nutritional balance of a home-prepared diet has been assessed.

If the skin or coat changes, note when the symptoms started, how long they have lasted, any itching, and changes in food or medication.

If you are considering a supplement, decide what improvement you want to see and over what period; a single study dose is not a general at-home dosing instruction.

If there is no improvement, or redness, oozing, pain or extensive hair loss occurs, investigate another cause.

Tell your veterinarian which supplements your dog receives, especially before specialised laboratory tests.

Biotin is an essential nutrient and may be a useful supplement for some dogs. But if a skin problem persists, we still need to ask why the skin became problematic in the first place. Otherwise, we might spend months treating the coat while missing the real cause.

Sources

Frigg, M., Schulze, J. & Völker, L.
