I've lived with dogs, cats and even a rat since childhood. I've always loved animals, but the older I get, the clearer it becomes that I'm a dog person. I have nothing against cats; I simply wouldn't choose to have one at home now. Reptiles are a different story altogether: they wouldn't be my choice of companion.

Can we infer what kind of person I am from all that? Perhaps a little, but nowhere near as easily as popular 'dog people versus cat people' personality quizzes suggest. Let's look at what the research actually shows, what it doesn't show, and why choosing the right pet depends on much more than one personality trait.

Dog people and cat people: is there a real difference?

In a study published in 2010, 4,565 people completed an online Big Five personality questionnaire and identified themselves as dog people, cat people, both, or neither. On average, people who identified as dog people scored higher on extraversion, agreeableness and conscientiousness than those who identified as cat people. The cat-person group scored higher, on average, on openness and neuroticism, a measure associated with greater emotional reactivity.

It's an intriguing finding, but the words 'on average' really matter. The groups' scores overlapped substantially. The study doesn't show that every dog person is outgoing or every cat person is introverted, let alone that having a pet changes your personality. Participants chose to take part and chose which kind of 'animal person' they considered themselves to be. This was not a random sample of the entire population, and the results primarily concern self-identification, not necessarily actual pet ownership.

In 2014, reports also described research by Denise Guastello and colleagues involving around 600 university students. Personality differences between dog and cat enthusiasts were reported there as well. But the sample consisted of students, and the public descriptions mostly came from coverage of a conference presentation. We shouldn't generalise those findings to every age group or every pet owner. In particular, sensational claims that fans of one animal are 'smarter' than the other deserve caution.

Pets can offer real support, but they aren't a personality test

Perhaps what our relationship with an animal gives us matters even more than which one we choose. A 2011 paper by Allen McConnell and colleagues included three separate studies. In one community sample, pet ownership was associated with higher self-esteem and greater physical activity, among other measures. In another, it mattered how well the pet fulfilled the person's social needs. In the third, a laboratory experiment, thinking about one's pet or its significance helped ease negative feelings after an experience of social rejection.

An important distinction: the research suggested that support from pets could complement human relationships, rather than replace them. It doesn't establish that getting a dog cures loneliness or depression, or that all pet owners are happier than people without pets. Relationships, health, circumstances and pre-existing personality also influence outcomes.

For me, there's a very human point here: we don't choose animals only because of who we are, but also because of the life we want and are able to share with them. I believe a pet needs to fit your lifestyle.

Why does one person choose a dog and another a cat?

One possible explanation is compatibility with the rhythm of everyday life. A dog may mean several walks a day, training, trips together and lots of interaction. Life with a cat follows a different routine, although cats also need play, care, space and a sense of security. Neither is better; the question is which way of life suits the particular animal and its person.

There's a small trap in the logic here. If dog owners are more active in a study, did the dog make them move more, or were active people already more likely to choose a dog? Both could be true to some degree. A one-time survey can't untangle the reasons. The same applies to sociability: walks can help people meet others, but people who already like socialising may also be more likely to choose a dog.

Then there's personal taste, childhood experience, family, home, money, allergies and that inexplicable connection you sometimes feel with a particular animal. Not all of that fits into a table of five personality traits.

What about reptiles, birds and fish?

Older popular accounts contain amusing stereotypes: reptile keepers are said to be especially independent, bird owners talkative, and fish keepers calm optimists. They might make for entertaining conversation starters, but they don't have the same body of evidence, replicated across groups, as studies of dog and cat preferences. They shouldn't be treated as reliable personality profiles.

It would be especially funny to claim that my dislike of keeping reptiles tells you everything about my personality. It really tells you about one preference. When choosing a bird, aquarium fish or lizard, the important thing is the species' actual needs, not a stereotype about its owner.

Sometimes our pets really do start to resemble us

I've noticed in myself that the stage of life also changes which companion I want. As a child, both dogs and cats belonged in my world. Today I can't imagine life without dogs. That proves no personality theory, but it does say something about my habits, values and what I want to devote time to.

Even so, I wouldn't take on every dog breed, however much I might like it. Someone who particularly values quiet and a spotless home but has little desire to exercise or spend time working with a dog may find living with a German Shepherd, Belgian Malinois, Husky or Malamute challenging. Of course, breed names aren't diagnoses: temperament and activity vary within breeds too. Still, in my opinion, the odds of getting a truly laid-back couch potato in the shape of a Malinois are fairly slim. That's exactly why it's so important to get to know the individual dog, its needs and background.

My experience also tells me that people and dogs learn one another's rhythm over the years. A dog can draw us outdoors more often; we, in turn, shape its daily routines. It's a two-way relationship, not a mirror that gives us a perfect personality reading every morning.

FendaF’s practical checklist before choosing a pet

Do I genuinely have time for this animal every day, not only at weekends?

What are the exercise, play, social and environmental needs of this species and this individual animal?

Will my home and daily routine suit them when workdays are long or the weather is unpleasant?

Can I plan for years of care, treatment, holidays and unexpected expenses?

Am I choosing the animal based on its real needs rather than an image associated with its breed or species?

So what does our choice say about us in the end?

Maybe that our preferences offer a small clue about our personality. But our choice of pet says just as much about our lifestyle, experiences, possibilities and relationship with that particular animal. Group averages in research don't predict whether your friend will make a good dog owner, or whether a quiet person could be an excellent match for an active dog.

I like to think a good companion brings out the best in us. But with animals comes responsibility too: we shouldn't only choose the one we like, but also ask whether we are the right people for them. That's a far more useful question than 'are you a dog person or a cat person?'

Sources

Gosling, S.
