Not a treat that disappears in three seconds, but something that engages the jaws and attention. Yet tendon is more than an activity. It is natural connective tissue, rich in collagen and other connective-tissue constituents. These may be a useful addition to the diet of a growing puppy or a healthy adult dog, not only a dog that already has joint problems.

For me, tendon combines a satisfying natural behaviour with nutrients from animal tissue. It does not need to be a medicine, or contain exactly the same quantities of compounds as a joint supplement, to have value. Let us look at what we know about its composition, what we can reasonably conclude and how to choose a suitable chew.

What exactly is a tendon?

A tendon is strong, fibrous connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone. Its structure is rich in collagen, particularly type I collagen. Drying removes much of the water, leaving a dense, tough, protein-rich chew. But “tendon” does not mean every tendon treat is identical. Beef neck tendon, tendon from another body part, thickness, drying method and any additives all affect the texture and how a dog chews it.

The collagen in tendon is a protein with a different amino-acid profile from muscle meat. That does not make it worthless or inferior; it makes it a different ingredient. The body needs amino acids to build and renew tissues, and a collagen-rich animal chew can add variety to a dog’s food. Naturally, it does not replace a balanced main diet, especially during growth.

Collagen, glucosamine and chondroitin: value for healthy dogs too

The nutritional distinction of tendon is its collagen-rich connective tissue. Collagen is a normal constituent of tendons, ligaments, skin and other tissues. A dog’s body builds and renews these tissues throughout life. During puppyhood, tissues are developing particularly rapidly; in adult dogs, repair and renewal continue. So collagen is not a subject reserved for elderly dogs or those with joint disease. In appropriate amounts, a connective-tissue-rich chew can be part of a healthy dog’s varied diet.

Tendon is not made of collagen alone. Connective tissue also contains proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans, which may include chondroitin sulphate. Their amounts depend on the tissue region and processing method. A tendon chew therefore cannot automatically be equated with cartilage or with a glucosamine-chondroitin supplement of known strength. We also lack a laboratory analysis stating the precise content of these compounds in this particular FendaF tendon. But not knowing every milligram does not make natural connective tissue valueless. It simply means we cannot promise a specific therapeutic dose or treatment for joint disease.

Eating collagen does not mean it travels unchanged to a dog’s hip or knee. Digestion releases amino acids and smaller peptides that the body can use. Certain specialised collagen peptides have also been studied in dogs with joint problems: some studies found improved mobility, whereas others found no measurable clinical benefit. Those studies examined products of specified composition and dosage, not ordinary dried tendon. To me, the reasonable conclusion is that tendon can contribute to a varied, health-supportive diet without being expected or advertised to act like medicine.

There is one important boundary for growing puppies: tendon is a supplement to the diet, not a replacement for complete growth food. Large-breed puppies in particular need an appropriate growth rate and balanced intake of energy, calcium and phosphorus. A moderate, suitable chew does not have to be intended to treat an existing joint problem. It can simply provide dietary variety and a worthwhile activity. But it has not been proven that chewing dried tendon prevents joint disease later in life.

Chewing can provide activity and calm

For some dogs, a tough chew is an excellent way to settle down after a walk. They have something to work on and can engage in a natural activity, while their owner gets a little breathing room. Dogs differ, of course: one will patiently work on the same chew for ages; another will try to finish it as quickly as possible.

We should distinguish behavioural observations from measured stress reduction. Chewing may be enjoyable and absorbing, but we cannot promise every tendon lowers cortisol or treats anxiety. If a dog guards chews, gulps them down or swallows large pieces, the same product may not be the right choice.

Does tendon clean a dog’s teeth?

Chewing creates mechanical contact between teeth and food. It may remove some soft plaque, but the effect depends on the item’s shape, texture, how long the dog chews and which teeth are involved. We cannot promise that every dried tendon removes tartar, prevents gum disease or works as well as daily toothbrushing.

If dental care is your main reason for buying a chew, look for products accepted by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) for their measured plaque or tartar reduction. Such acceptance does not automatically apply to all animal chews.

There is another side: an overly hard chew may fracture a tooth. Cornell University’s veterinary dental specialists suggest the fingernail test as a simple screening rule: an object so hard that your fingernail cannot make a mark may be too hard on teeth. This is not a guarantee of safety, but it helps avoid extremely rigid chews. Dried tendons vary considerably in hardness according to thickness and drying. If your dog has worn, damaged or painful teeth, discuss chew suitability with your veterinarian.

When can a chew become dangerous?

I do not agree that a tendon must be incapable of causing choking or an intestinal blockage simply because it is natural and edible. A large piece can become stuck in the throat or cause problems further down the digestive tract. Of course, any food can cause choking in a dog that gulps. The risk increases when a dog swallows hastily, the chew is too small or a softened piece is swallowed whole. Signs of intestinal obstruction may also appear later, rather than during the chewing session.

FendaF’s chewing rule

Choose the tendon for your dog’s size, dental condition and chewing habits. Offer it only under supervision, and remove the remaining piece when it becomes small enough to swallow whole. If your dog gags, drools unusually, repeatedly vomits or develops abdominal pain, do not try to push the problem through with more food. Seek veterinary help promptly.

Not every dog is suited to dried tendon. A powerful chewer may try to crush it instead of slowly softening it. A large and very hard tendon may be wrong for a small dog. Puppies with changing teeth, older dogs with fragile teeth and dogs with a history of swallowing problems may need a softer activity or a different kind of treat.

How should tendon fit into the daily diet?

One easy thing to overlook: tendon is food, not a calorie-free toy. Although dried tendon consists largely of protein, its energy content depends on the particular product and its fat level. If a dog gets several substantial chews on top of its regular meals, they count towards the day’s intake. The same is particularly relevant for overweight dogs or those with pancreatic problems, where added fat may matter.

A dog that reacts to beef protein is not automatically able to tolerate beef tendon just because it is connective tissue rather than meat. During a strict elimination trial, no extra chew should be added unless it belongs to the dietary plan. For dogs with sensitive digestion, start small and observe their response. “All tendons are easily digestible” is not a reliable general rule.

What should you look for when buying?

I favour clearly described products that identify the animal species, body part, drying method and producer. A single-ingredient product is a good starting point, but hygiene, storage and manufacturing traceability matter even with one ingredient. Country of origin alone does not prove that a product is safe or unsafe; transparent production information tells us more than a “100% natural” label.

You can find dried beef neck tendon in the FendaF range too. What I particularly like is that one product can offer an activity, the pleasure of chewing and collagen-rich animal tissue all at once. It need not be reserved for elderly dogs or those with joint problems. Provided its size and hardness suit the individual dog and you have considered dental health and chewing habits, it can be a lovely addition for both younger and adult dogs.

In summary

Dried tendon is not just a hard treat to occupy the dog. It is collagen-rich animal connective tissue that can add variety and naturally occurring connective-tissue constituents to the menu. It can be a reasonable part of a growing puppy’s or healthy adult dog’s diet, provided the main diet is balanced and the chew is appropriate. We cannot equate tendon with a standardised joint supplement, but that is no reason to dismiss its nutritional value.

For me, that is the attraction: chewing, concentration and a collagen-rich animal ingredient in one. We do not need to promise lifelong healthy joints from a single treat. Choosing a suitable, good-quality product and offering it in moderation is enough.

Sources

Lewis JR (2023): Considerations for Chew Items for Dogs and Cats

Cornell University: Risks from a fractured tooth

Veterinary Oral Health Council: Accepted Products for Dogs

FDA: Keep Your Dogs and Cats Safe From Holiday Hazards

ASPCA: Position Statement on Dog Chews/Treats

Eisner et al.
